Deformation Processes in the Andes - new Data and Problems: Abstracts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Since Miocene times the area of the Salar de Antofalla, located east of the present Andean volcanic arc, was an isolated area of continental sedimentation.
In particular, faulting during the mid-Miocene (Quechua phase) led to a narrow, elongated broken-foreland basin (Salar de Antofalla basin).
Normal faults are especially frequent on both rims of the southern Salar de Antofalla and are interpreted as progressive step faults, triggered by gravitational effects.

We departure towards “Antofalla”, 100 kilometers away, along “Quebrada del Diablo”, with a pass that is at 4400 meters in altitude.
This is a good opportunity to put each one´s reactions to altitude to the test, without serious hitches since we quickly descend to 3300 meters, at the edge of Antofalla saltmine, which we go through so as to reach the “Botijuela” oasis.
Some time later we arrive to “Antofalla”, where the warmest of welcomes of the 60 inhabitants is given to us.

Thereby the attributes of the contaminant are changing between arc and back arc, because Sr and Pb isotopic data show an obvious zonation between the Andean Cordillera and the Antofalla region.
Within the arc this trend is only weakly developed and the highest value reached is 0,70714 regardless of age or rock composition.
With given SiO2 content volcanic rocks of the Antofalla region are displaced to higher Pb isotopic composition compared to arc rocks.

In particular this research is focussed on the evolution of some of the crustal blocks that constitute southern South America (i.e.
The Rio de la Plata cratonic block and the terranes of Patagonia, Precordillera, Famatina, and Antofalla) and their tectonic evolution prior to and during their assembly into Gondwana.
Another project currently active involves the application of magnetic fabric studies to determine the emplacement processes and conditions of Paleozoic granites in the Pampean Ranges.

Miller (1999) interpreted the granitoids as originated from a transpressional collision.
It is probable that they have been generated in the margin of the Arequipa- Antofalla massif, while the tardi to posttectonic granites of the central Batholithic Zone, have been generated from an ensialic, thickened crust for a rapid adiabatic decompression (Rossi et al.

Accomodations are correct, with three nights staying in a comfortable small hotel; another night in the house of our friend Manuel Ramos in Antofalla, modest but familiar, with beds, sheets, hot water; and finally the last night in the Plaza Hotel in La Rioja.
The meals, elaborated and supervised by Nicole, are varied, plentiful and delicious (despite the sometimes adverse circumstances).
Then we go down up to 3400 metres in altitude to cross Antofalla´s saltmine and finally arrive in Antofalla town where the warmest of welcomes of the 60 inhabitants is given to us.
