After Josquin Desprez, Brumel is considered one of the greatest composers of his generation.

Antoine Brumel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Jachet Brumel was organist for the Ferrara court in 1543, and is presumed to be Antoine's son.
Brumel was at the center of the changes that were taking place in European music around 1500, in which the previous style of highly differentiated voice parts, composed one after another, was giving way to smoothly flowing, equal parts, composed simultaneously.
Brumel's Missa pro defunctis for four voices, a late work, is notable for being the first Requiem to include a polyphonic setting of the Dies Irae.

 Gimell CDGIM 026
Brumel's masterpiece did not inaugurate a fashion for massive compositions; but it did quickly establish a formidable reputation for itself, admired throughout central Europe in the 16th century as an experiment which could not easily be repeated.
Brumel's only surviving set of Lamentations, one of the most beautiful in the repertory, is also one of the most sombre, building up a rare mood of desolation by low scoring and slow harmonic movement.
Brumel here again relied on rhythmical sequences, at times almost baroque in their vitality, which give an interesting perspective, in four parts, to the astonishing twelve-part music of the Mass.

 Chanticleer Earthquake Mass notes
In Antoine Brumel we have one of the most celebrated composers of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, praised during his own day and over the following century by writers and musicians alike.
Brumel, on the other hand, seems to have been the only major composer from France to have achieved international renown.
Since Brumel had no models that we know of for composition in twelve voices, especially for a work of this scope, he had to devise his own method for disposition of such forces.

Brumel was a top composer in the Franco-Flemish tradition during the time of Josquin and Obrecht.
Brumel was a pupil of Josquin, and historically significant as the first truly French composer to be associated with the court in Burgundy.
Brumel's style in this Mass (and in much of his work) is primarily chordal, largely eschewing contrapuntal intricacy and making sparing use of imitation.

 ANTOINE BRUMEL, Biography, Discography
Thomas Morley (in A Plain and Easy Introduction to Practical Music, 1597) was probably the last writer to praise Brumel for his skill, the only master he ranked alongside Josquin, making particular reference to his ability in the art of canonic composition.
Brumel is important to modern commentators because he was one of the few leading members of the Franco-Flemish school to be genuinely French, which is to say that he was born outside the boundaries of the Burgundian Empire, somewhere near Chartres.
There is evidence that he was employed in Geneva, Chambéry and probably Rome; but the high-point of his career was the fifteen years he spent as successor to Josquin and Obrecht at the court of Ferrara (between 1505 and 1520) in the retinue of Alfonso d'Este I. Discography

 Antoine Brumel - A discography
Antoine Brumel (c.1460-c.1515) may have been the only major Franco-Flemish polyphonist of the Josquin generation to be born within France proper, perhaps near Chartres.
Brumel was one of the composers to whom Petrucci devoted a volume of masses (1503), and indeed his masses continue to be his most famous works.
Brumel wrote over thirty motets in a variety of styles, as well as a handful of secular songs and instrumental pieces.

However, perhaps the most telling comment of all by Mary Berry in her comparison of the Huelgas and Tallis Scholar Brumel recordings is that "there is an infectious warmth and sense of involvement in the singing of the Belgian group".
Brumel, born in 1460, was one of the students of the great composer Josquin des Pres, becoming one of the great Franco-Flemish composers in his own right.
Their recordings are of a consistent quality that deserve more than five stars; this particular disc of pieces by Brumel is worthy of a place on the shelf of anyone who loves choral music, liturgical music or Gregorian chant, classical music generally, or religious music.

Both were born in 'circa' 1460 and their death is separated by only two years; De La Rue's in 1518, Brumel's in 1520.
Brumel's piece betrays a certain affinity with Josquin and the Italian tradition.
His more functional style aspires to not much more than the simple harmonisation of the chant tunes and through the languid and relaxed charm of this music, he is able to create some wonderful reflective melodies out of the simplest of ideas.

 Chanticleer: An Orchestra of Voices
French Renaissance composer Antoine Brumel's Missa Berzerette savoyenne takes its title and much of its distinctive material from a French chanson by Josquin des Prez, with a text about a young man courting a shepherdess.
Brumel successfully borrowed this popular tune and manipulated it in several ways into his mass, thus bringing into the church some of the frolicking gaiety and vigorous humor of the countryside.
