Antoine Busnois - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Busnois was at the siege of Neuss in Germany in 1475, and fortunately survived (or did not attend) the disastrous Battle of Nancy in 1477 at which Charles was killed and the expansion of Burgundy was forever stilled.
Busnois remained in the employ of the Burgundian court until 1482, but nothing exact is known about his exploits between then and 1492, when he died.
Busnois also wrote chansons, French secular songs, and these are the work on which his reputation mainly rests.

Hayne van Ghizeghem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His musical talent must have been noticed early by Charles, Count of Charolais (later to become Charles the Bold) because there is a record of his being personally assigned to a teacher by him; in 1467 he is shown in the Burgundian employment records as being a singer.
In addition, he was named along with Adrien Basin and Antoine Busnois as "chantre et valet de chambre" to Charles, indicating the special regard in which he was held.
In addition to serving as a singer and composer, he evidently served as a soldier as well, for there is a record of purchase of military equipment for him, prior to the campaign against Liège by Charles.

 Antoine Busnoys - A discography
Antoine Busnoys (c.1430-1492), sometimes spelled Busnois, was the leading songwriter of the late Burgundian style.
Busnoys may have been born in Busnes, and although much of his career is documented in some detail, his early life and training remain a mystery.
Busnoys' formal innovations proved to be very successful, blending an interest in imitation and triadic harmony into carefully organized arching lines divided by ostinato and cross-rhythm.

Busnoys was best known for his secular music, and indeed his finest works in these forms compare well with those of the acknowledged master of the age, Johannes Ockeghem.
In fact, Busnoys' best known work, the motet-chanson "In hydraulis," is a tribute to Ockeghem, his teacher.
Busnoys' compositions delight in all manner of tricks, from harmonic effects to lyrical acrostics.

Busnois: Missa L'Homme armé & Domarto: Missa Spiritus almus
The French composer, singer and poet Busnois was widely acknowledged as one of the most outstanding composers of his time, and his Missa L'homme armé (circa 1460) was one of the most revered works of the later fifteenth century.
His was definitely one of, if not the first of masses to be composed on this tune, and another 40 or so were written subsequently by various composers of various nationalities.
In fact, many of Busnois' works inspired emulations, and the other two works on this disc by him are as equally mesmerising and exhilarating.

The cycle seemingly originated at the Burgundian court between 1465-70, and was dedicated to Beatrice of Aragon only later, after the death of Charles the Bold (1477).
Busnois may have outlined the cycle's scheme and assigned its completion to his disciples.
The author analyzes the characteristics of the melody in its older sources (two chansons) and examines its use in polyphonic Masses from 1460-80, including those by Busnois, Ockeghem, Dufay, Aron, Regis, Faugues, and Tinctoris, as well as the anonymous Mass in MS Q 16 in Bologna.

ArkivMusic | Busnois: Missa O Crux Lignum / Orlando Consort
What makes Busnois so special is his melodic facility and rhythmic interest, especially notable in the chansons, which are full of lively syncopation and catchy phrasing, and his affinity for unlabored, smoothly flowing counterpoint in the sacred settings, which usually are based on a cantus firmus chant melody.
The four voices of the Orlando Consort--countertenor, two tenors, and baritone--obtain what we must assume is a reasonably authentic period sound, and the singers take care to preserve the individuality of each voice rather than try for the kind of pure, uniform timbre characteristic of some other similar groups, such as the Hilliard Ensemble.
My only reservation here is that Robert Harre-Jones' countertenor is so prominent relative to the other voices, and Busnois' music is so texturally undifferentiated that over the course of several tracks the ear wants either a rest or something more varied in terms of voicing or tone quality.
