Antoine Coysevox Biography / Biography of Antoine Coysevox Biography
Antoine Coysevox was born in Lyons on Sept. 29, 1640.
Coysevox's later works reveal marked tendencies toward the rococo, the light, delicate, intimate style which was to dominate the arts during the first half of the 18th century.
The duchess is shown as a lighthearted goddess of the hunt, her pose animated, her draperies gently agitated by her movement; the composition is pierced with space, and the surface presents a refined contrast of delicate textures.

 Biography
His style was more Baroque than Girardon's and Coysevox overtook his rival in popularity towards the end of the 17th century as the king's taste turned away from the classical.
By 1679 Coysevox was working at Versailles, where he made numerous statues for the gardens and did much interior decoration, including a striking relief of Louis XIV in the Salon de la Guerre.
His originality, however, is seen mostly in his portrait busts, which show a naturalism of conception and an animation of expression that look forward to the Rococo.

Attributed by Keller-Dorian to Antoine Coysevox (1), Collignon's authorship of this portrait bust was reestablished by Sainte-Beuve (2) on the basis of a drawing by Charles-Nicolas Cochin; engraved by Augustin de Saint-Aubin it was described in the Mercure de France in 1770 as 'after the bust by Collignon' (3).
Collaborating with Coysevox, Collignon made the figure of Victory for the tomb of the Marquis de Vaubrun between 1677-78 and working from Le Brun's design he had completed sculpting the tomb of Julienne Le Bé, mother of Charles Le Brun, in Saint-Nicolas-du-Chardonnet, Paris by 1686 (6).
Keller-Dorian misattributes Collignon's bronze bust on Lully's tomb, to Coysevox and at pl.74 reproduces a plaster cast in the Musée de Versailles which was taken by Jean-Jacques Caffiéri from Collignon's bust on the tomb in 1765.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Charles-Antoine Coysevox
Coysevox made two bronze statues of Louis XIV, the "Charlemagne" at Saint-Louis des Invalides, and other famous works, but his most famous is probably "La Renommée" at the entrance of the Tuileries — two winged horses bearing Mercury and Fame.
Napoleon is said to have delighted in the sculptor's fancy that the horse of Mercury should have a bridle, but not that of Fame.
Coysevox also produced some fine sepulchral monuments for the churches of Paris.

The master of baroque sculpture was Bernini, whose Ecstasy of St Theresa is a fine example of overt emotionalism.
Other baroque sculptors were Pierre Puget and Antoine Coysevox, both French.
In music, the baroque can be traced to the Camerata, a society of poets and musicians who revived elements of Greek drama and developed the opera form in Florence; Claudio Monteverdi and Giovanni Gabrieli were important figures in early baroque music, introducing exclamatory and polychoral effects.
