Antoine Henri Becquerel (December 15, 1852 – August 25, 1908) was a (The Romance language spoken in France and in countries colonized by France) French (A scientist trained in physics) physicist, Nobel laureate, and one of the discoverers of radioactivity.
Becquerel was born in (The capital and largest city of France; and international center of culture and commerce) Paris into a scientific family which, including him and his son, produced four generations of scientists.
In 1896, Becquerel accidentally discovered (The spontaneous emission of a stream of particles or electromagnetic rays in nuclear decay) radioactivity while investigating (A fluorescence that persists after the bombarding radiation has ceased) phosphorescence in (A heavy toxic silvery-white radioactive metallic element; occurs in many isotopes; used for nuclear fuels and nuclear weapons) uranium salts.

Becquerel concluded "that the phosphorescent substance in question emits radiation which penetrates paper opaque to light." Initially he believed that the sun's energy was being absorbed by the uranium which then emitted X rays.
Becquerel was awarded the third Nobel Prize in Physis 1903 for "the discovery of spontaneous radioactivity", together with Marie and Pierre Curie for "work on the radiation phenomena discovered by Becquerel".

In 1806 he entered the Polytechnic School after having studied at the Central School of Fontainebleau under Billy, and later at the College Henri IV with Cauchy.
Becquerel's work in electro-chemistry brought him, in 1837, the award of the Copley medal of the Royal society of London.
His character seems best described by the chemist Dumas: "Becquerel loved his country, his science, his family." Fizeau ends his funeral oration with these words: "He died with the serenity of a sage and the tranquillity of a good man, with confidence in God and the immortal hopes of a Christian".
