 Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle
He was the son of Nicolas Perrenot, prime minister of Charles V, studied at Padua and Louvain, and at an early age was introduced by his father to political life.
Ecclesiastical favours and benefices were showered upon the young man. He became prothonotary Apostolic in 1529, archdeacon of Besançon, archdeacon of Cambrai, and was made Bishop of Arras in 1538 at the age of twenty-one.
Worldly and ostentatious, and more than once accused of laxity of morals, Granvelle possessed the qualities and defects of a prelate of the Renaissance, with a superiority of intellect and sense of his duties as a statesman which deserve respect.

The Habsburg dynasty is the unifying factor in Claudia Banz’s study of the patronage of Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle, later Cardinal and from 1550 political advisor to Charles V and then Philip II, and the Archdukes Albert and Isabella, son-in-law and daughter of Philip II who from 1598 served as Regents in the Spanish Netherlands.
For Granvelle emulating royal patronage was a means of overcoming the humiliation of stemming from a minor noble family, of demonstrating his cultural and aesthetic taste and his superiority over the Netherlandish nobility.
The princely aspirations of Granvelle are rejected by the Archdukes who, so Banz’s conclusion, adopted a policy of commissioning ‘down-to-earth’ art which emphasised their identification with their Netherlandish subjects and thereby improve the reputation of the Habsburg dynasty so tarnished by political and religious events.

Under Philip, Spanish imperial rule in the Netherlands was harsh and intolerant, especially toward Protestants, who were persecuted by the Inquisition.
William and other members of the Dutch nobility organized a strong movement against Spanish oppression, with the result that in 1564 Philip was forced to recall the hated Netherlands prime minister, Cardinal Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle (1517–86).
Three years later, however, Philip, alarmed by a widespread Dutch rebellion, sent Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, duke of Alva, and an army to the Netherlands with instructions to stamp out all civil and religious dissent.
