 Biography
Reviewing Stephen Coombs's Arensky potpourri a few years back, Lawrence Johnson damned the music with faint praise as “charming if lightweight morsels.” It would be foolhardy to call upon this 1894 cycle to challenge his description.
True, the anonymous notes, quoting Arensky's pupil Goldenweiser, point to the work's exalted pedigree: It was “inspired by I. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier.” But the high-minded nature of the model was offset by an almost parlor-game approach to composition.
As Goldenweiser describes it, Arensky “sketched 24 themes” in advance, and “placed each one… into a vase.

Later, after becoming known for his distinctive musical style (which combined Tchaikovskian elegance with unusual meters), Arensky succeeded Mily Balakirev as the music director of the imperial chapel.
After leaving the chapel, Arensky went on a series of concert tours; however, his debauched lifestyle quickly caught up with him, and he died of tuberculosis at the age of forty-four.

This convenient program brings together Anton Arensky's three charming suites for orchestra, all of them vintage examples of Romantic Russian music.
On the whole, the Moscow Symphony Orchestra under Dmitry Yablonsky gives a thoroughly professional account of itself and of these scores, though I would have preferred a more forward woodwind balance and a bit more character from that section's principals, especially as Arensky gives them a lot to do.
Still, with no other serious competition in this music--and given vivid sonics--I can recommend this program with confidence as an important addition to any Russian music collection.
