Dohrn was born in Stettin, Pomerania, present day Poland, in 1840, into a wealthy middle class family.
Anton, the youngest son, read zoology and medicine at various German universities (Königsberg, Bonn, Jena and Berlin), with little application or enthusiasm for his studies.
Dohrn overcame the doubts of the city authorities and persuaded them to give him, free-of-charge, a plot of land at the sea edge, in the beautiful Villa Comunale on the condition that he promised to build the Stazione Zoologica at his own expense.

The Stazione Zoologica "Anton Dohrn" - today barely visible among the centennial trees in the Villa Comunale, the park stretching along the seashore from Mergellina to Piazza Vittoria - is the world's oldest international independent research institute devoted to studies in marine biology.
Anton Dohrn was born in 1840 at Stettin into a well to do bourgeois family: his grandfather, Heinrich Dohrn, a merchant of wine and spices, made a fortune in the sugar industry; his father, Carl August, could therefore devote himself to his various hobbies.
Dohrn and Maclay decided therefore to cover the globe with a network of zoological research stations, analogous to railway stations, where scientists could stop, collect material or do some in situ research before moving on to the next station.

The History of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn An Outline
Anton Dohrn was convinced that the availability of all major published sources in addition to good working facilities was a necessity for advanced research.
As Anton Dohrn himself put it in 1872 "In the same way as linguistics reconstructs original languages, the zoologist should be able to outline a comprehensive picture of an animal group from a large amount of embryological data … to identify the ancestor of the whole group".
Dohrn charged Federico Raffaele, a professor at Naples University who had been an assistant at the Stazione, with direction and established himself in Zurich, as a guest of the Zoological Museum, where the editorial office of the journals was also transferred.
