The Golden Palominos - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Golden Palominos was an American musical group headed by drummer and composer Anton Fier that was first formed in 1981.
Apart from Fier, the Palominos membership was wildly elastic; While the Palominos records usually featured a core set of musicians though the bulk of an album, various guest appearances would result in personnel and stylistic changes from track to track.
The group first featured Fier, singer-guitarist Arto Lindsay, saxophonist John Zorn, bass guitarist Bill Laswell and violinist/guitarist Fred Frith, with guest shots from bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, guitarist Nicky Skopelitis, percussionist David Moss, turntablist M.E. Miller and others.

Anton goes on to describe the style of the last releases; 'I view the Dreamspeed record as a Japanese version of what I was doing with the Palominos and it laid the groundwork for This Is How It Feels and now for Pure.
Anton Fier emphasises; 'I'm trying to make music that doesn't fit into the neat pockets [of the music industry] but falls somewhere between.
Anton Fier has an ear for the best of the seething mass of hip' releases of the week, and his tastes span too many subcultures to confine the future of the Palominos to one particular genre.

Being more familiar with Harris' beat-driven work, I would have expected his involvment here to have ended up on the second disc called Rhythm, but instead, his piece Stir is an ambient composition on the disc called Ambient.
"Ascesis" by ANTON FIER is the next velvet-soft zephyr to undulate along the Tympanic canal, hardly bending the cilia in it's passage.
FIER's percussion is like water dripping from a cave ceiling to create ripples in unseen pools.

Fier is usually more uppity, as can be seen on Valis and Crooklyn Dub [he’s erroneously thinking of Layng Martine’s Corp. Blossom tracks on these comps.
The composition is a curving sonic march across the bones of musical thoughts that ordinarily remain hidden, or that are too abvious to see or too sublime to think about.
Laswell Golden Palomino-buddy Anton Fier steps in next with an un- characteristically flat pience of cold terrain called "Blue Filter", nice and cold and squirty, the kind of music you might hear as you die in the ice of hypothermia.

The second phase of Fier's Palomino experiment took an entirely different direction, converting a loose caravan of talent into an unstable side-group which sporadically performs and records in countless permutations and combinations.
As producer, drummer and co-writer of the songs, Fier is on stylistically unprecedented ground careerwise, but his control and taste are impeccable.
Except for Straw singing Peter Holsapple's "Diamond," the material isn't especially interesting; the performances are routine and the darkening outlines of a repeatable formula discourage faith in the future of Fier's creative vision and energy.

Anton Fier : drums, programming, percussion, beats, loops; Bill Laswell : bass; Lori Carson : voices; Lydia Kavanagh : voices (5,8,12); Bootsy Collins : guitar; Nicky Skopelitis : guitar; Bernie Worrell : Hammond organ; Matt Stein : programming, loops, effects; Amanda Kramer : keyboards, string arrangement (8); Jeff Bova (8) : keyboards, additional programming.
With vocalist Lori Carson on board and revolving more primarily around Anton Fier and Bill Laswell, the Golden Palominos entered a phase of trip-hop, remarkably free from derivative and mindless connotation.
Her writing and singing provides the emotional backbone of This Is How It Feels, while a usual collection of stellar musicians ranging from bassist Bill Laswell to guitarists Bootsy Collins and Nicky Skopelitis gives the record its sonic grooves.

The Golden Palominos are a New York-based studio group masterminded by ace drummer/producer Anton Fier.
Fier remains the only consistent member of the Palominos from album to album (albeit with occasional holdover members), and he always has a continuing revolving door of musicians and singers to round out the Palominos line-up on each album.
FABULOUS musicianship is on display here: Anton Fier's slammin' drumbeats, Bill Laswell's ultra-fat and funky basslines, masterful fretboard work from Bootsy Collins, Knox Chandler and Nicky Skopelitus, atmospheric keyboard-playing from Amanda Kramer, and finally, the aforementioned lovely voices of Lori Carson and Lydia Kavanaugh.

This album would be the Golden Palominos' only trip down the avant-garde jazz-fusion road, as Anton Fier would bring in a whole new set of musicians & singers for the group's next album, the more accessible "Visions Of Excess," including R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, Jack Bruce of Cream, and the Sex Pistol's John Lydon.
In fact the DMX programming by Fier is basically a "Heavy Skeleton" over which the rest of the sound effects, rap, sound sculptures, and Laswell's bass is draped.
Featuring a no wave supergroup consisting of Anton Fier, Arto Lindsay, Bill Laswell, John Zorn, Jamaladeen Tacuma, David Moss, Michael Beinhorn, Fred Frith and others I can't recall, this group threw noise, funk, hip hop, sound collage and a couple other influences into a "post rock stew" that few groups have equalled since.

Pere Ubu: Song Of The Bailing Man -- Ink Blot Magazine
When it first came out it represented a drastic change from all previous Ubu records; crisp melodies, hyperactive jazz-rock percussion, and straightforward lyrics replaced the noisy musique concrete and fragmentary songwriting of yore.
Part of the change could be attributed to the replacement of drummer Scott Krauss by Anton fier, whose all-over attack was matched in force only by his combative personality.
But lead singer David Thomas had also laid the groundwork for a shift towards accessibility the year before when he recorded his first solo album, The Sound of the Sand.
