Wilna was the chief centre from which this movement issued, and Brodziriski one of the foremost defenders of the new principles and the precursor of Mickiewicz, the appearance of whose ballads, romances, "Dziady" and "Grazyna" (1822), decided the war in favour of romanticism.

The Ernst Schering Foundation sponsors another première from the archives of the Sing-Akademie: "Compositions on Goethe's Faust" by Anton Heinrich von Radziwill will be performed on October 25, 2005, at 8:00 p.m.
Inspired by the then director of the Berlin Sing-Akademie, Carl Friedrich Zelter, Radziwill's work is the first setting to music of Goethe's Faust, created in close communication with Goethe himself.
Therefore, we are glad that the work of Radziwill makes possible an examination of the Faust epic on a different musical level, while making accessible to the public another work from the archives of the Sing-Akademie.

Although that occasion gave the work its enduring nickname (Beethoven detested the French nickname "La chasse," bestowed because of the buoyant 6/8 "hunting" meter of the main part of the overture), it was not performed as scheduled, perhaps because Beethoven was still tinkering with it.
It finally had its premiere on Christmas Day in 1815 on a hospital benefit concert given at the Redoutensaal in Vienna, and was dedicated to Prince Anton Heinrich Radziwill, an amateur composer who met Beethoven while attending the Congress of Vienna.
In November 1815 Beethoven's brother had died, leaving the composer with a contentious custody battle with his sister-in-law over the raising of his nine-year-old nephew Karl.
