Anton Reicha - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anton (or Antonin or Antoine) Reicha (or Rejcha) (February 26, 1770 – May 28, 1836) was a Czech-born naturalized French composer, a flautist in his youth, and an influential theorist.
Reicha moved with his family to Bonn in 1785, where he played the flute under the direction of his uncle in the Hofkapelle (1790–94) with the young violist Ludwig Beethoven.
Reicha is best known today for his substantial early contribution to the wind quintet literature, beginning with a piece he wrote in 1811 in Paris, which he discarded, but published in 1820 a set of six (Op.

From the age of ten, he lived with his uncle Josef Reicha, a prominent cellist and composer at the court of the Öttingen-Wallersteins at Castle Harburg near Ansbach.
Reicha's great cycle of 24 quintets were written for five professors at the Paris Conservatoire - all outstanding musicians, renowned for their virtuosity.
Reicha obviously had a high level of performance in mind when writing his quintets, which are amongst the most difficult pieces in the early repertoire.

Reicha's father, Simon, was the town piper of Prague - this was a paid municipal position that required the piper to climb the town tower at various times of day to announce the hour by tootling.
Reicha was one of the most original musicians of his time and held a place of great honor in French society.

Anton Reicha: Two Andantes & Adagio ('pour le cor anglais')
Whilst professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire in the 1810s and 1820s, the Prague-born Anto Reicha wrote twenty-four wind quintets (and is often credited as being the first composer to use this grouping).
But unlike his other quintets, the Two Andantes and Adagio (composed in Paris between 1817 and 1819) are written for a slightly unusual combination with cor anglais (probably intending the old curved instrument) replacing the oboe.
In most Reicha quintets one instrument plays a more soloistic rôle, and in these movements that function inevitably falls to the cor anglais.

Reicha was certainly asked for this composition by the horn player Louis François Dauprat (1781 -1868).
Because of his playing the quintets of Reicha and being the colleague at the conservatoire Dauprat was in close contact to Reicha.
That the contact between Dauprat and Reicha was closed can be proved by the print of the Parisian publisher Schlesinger (print label 1561/62): Number four of the original trios by Dauprat had been replaced by a new composition of Dauprat.

The microphones do seem to be placed quite close to the players (one can often hear the flautist’s intakes of breath) and, frankly, the sound does come across as somewhat studio-bound.
Of course, it may be that Reicha doesn’t demand soft playing but that I rather doubt.
They and Crystal Records have done Reicha proud and since this is one of the earliest releases in the series it can be said that the venture has been auspiciously launched.

Anton Reicha (Antonín Rejcha) was a Bohemian composer, born in Prague.
It has been said that Reicha is to the wind quintet what Haydn is to the string quartet – he almost single-handedly established the combination of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon as an important form.
Reicha's contributions to other forms are only now being seriously investigated.

When Reicha was fifteen his uncle moved the family to Bonn where Reicha played flute in an orchestra with the young Beethoven.
By the end of his life the prolific composer was renowned as a brilliant theorist and pedagogue, and his pupils included such notable figures as Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz, Charles Gounod and Cesar Franck.
At their best Reicha's quintets are filled with lovely melodic writing, intricate counterpoint (at which the diverse winds are particularly adept) original harmonies and innovative compositional techniques.

But while she lived, this student of Reicha and composer of fifty-one opus numbers, saw both of these symphonies performed to acclaim in public and private concerts both in France and abroad.
Whereas Reicha's many quintets can seem like symphonies in transcription, Gebauer's three quintets (from the 1820s) are in concertante style with plenty of opportunites for virtuoso display and unexpected tonal colors and instrumental combinations.
The most recent work, the cor anglais concerto of the composer's old age, is marvellously expressive and surprisingly Romantic in outlook, using the haunting voice of the solo protagonist in music which seems to have transcended the necessity of adherence to any school or doctrine.

There's a reason that Anton Reicha's music has remained unknown for so long: much of it is ferociously difficult to play.
The Grand quatuor concertant is larger still: at more than 35 minutes, this is a veritable chamber symphony for flute, cello, bassoon, and piano.
Reicha thrived on working with challenging instrumental combinations such as this, and he achieves results that are as musically natural sounding as they are entertaining.

His radical ideas did not make their way into his woodwind quintets, which are inventive yet thoroughly rooted in late Classical and early Romantic harmony and rhythms.
Reicha made this particular combination of instruments "his", and became renowned for his quintets, which rivaled the quartets of Haydn in popularity.
