Magne never faltered for the rest of the race, which suited Speicher just fine--they both rode for the French national team, and keeping the yellow jersey in France was the squad’s only objective.
Magne was not the most charismatic rider on the team--both Speicher and up-and-comer René Vietto won more stages--but he was the race’s most consistent finisher and a deserving overall champion
After giving Magne his front wheel on the Portet d'Aspet climb, Vietto sat along the roadside and waited for the race’s support vehicle to give him a new wheel.

Not even a super-strong Belgian team could dislodge Antonin Magne from the lead as he proved a worthy successor to his compatriot André Leducq.
Pesenti remained his nearest challenger until the penultimate stage, when Rebry, Magne and Demuysère broke away from the bunch and eventually finish with more than 17 minutes in hand.
This was sufficient to move Demuysère up to second and Rebry to fourth, but despite Belgium placing four riders in the top six, Magne, "the Taciturn", ran out a comfortable-enough winner in the end.

This time there could be no controversy: the French were completely dominant, with Antonin Magne leading from the second day and the team taking nineteen of the twenty three stages.
But as the race wore on, Vietto gained in strength, and whilst his team captain Magne had assumed the lead from World Champion Georges Speicher, Vietto went on to record three stage wins on the run through the Alps, hauling himself from nowhere into third place overall.
Turning round in the road, Vietto rode back down to his leader and once more gave up his wheel, and once more was left silently weeping on his own by the roadside to wait the repair lorry.

Welcome to the history of the Tour de France
Sprinters Charles Pélissier of France and Italy's Raphaële Di Paco spent the first week of the 1931 Tour wrestling for control of the yellow jersey.
On the Pyrénées mountain stage to Luchon, however, French star Antonin Magne came to the forefront and took over the race’s lead.
And despite a strong late challenge from Belgium's Jef Demuysère, Magne held the jersey all the way back to Paris.
