Musicians - Antonio Cifra (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.netlab.uky.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Antonio Cifra (1584–October 2, 1629) was an Italian composer of the Roman School of the Renaissance and early Baroque eras.
Cifra was a prolific composer, with 45 separate publications to his credit: they included psalms, motets, litanies, "Scherzi sacri," masses, polychoral motets, and sacred songs, as well as secular music including madrigals in both the Renaissance a cappella and Baroque concertato forms.
Stylistically, Cifra's music varies between masses in the Palestrina style, with much use of homophony (as desired by the Counter-Reformation Council of Trent, which had required that polyphonic elaboration be minimized so as to allow for clear expression of the text), and more progressive works in the Venetian style.

Antonio Forcione, like his friend Boothby Graffoe, is becoming something of a fixture at the Fringe, which is good news for anyone in Edinburgh who likes guitar-based jazz.
Antonio is joined on stage by four other musicians a cellist, an accordion player, a double-bassist and a percussionist.
Antonio Forcione is Italian born, but resident in London, and has absorbed so many influences that it is better not to list them.

Antonio Cabezón Biography | Encyclopedia of World Biography
The Spanish organ composer Antonio Cabezón (1510-1566) was blind.
The supposition that Antonio Cabezón derived at least partially from Jewish ancestry, because he was born at Castrillo de Matajudios (near Burgos), remains unproved.
In both the Netherlands and England one of the royal keyboard players was Antonio's brother, Juan de Cabezón, and one of the choirboys was the blind organist's son Agustin.

Antonio Salieri is, unfortunately, best known as Mozart's great Viennese rival.
Some of his work has appeared on recordings, and he was clearly an interesting composer of well-crafted, entertaining music.
He does this again in the aria from La Cifra "Non Vo Gia Che Vi Suonino" in which a bride describes to her groom what kind of music she wants played at her wedding.

UNC Music Department - Recent Dissertations
I begin with Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina's 1583/1584 fourth book of motets for five voices, and show that rather than using the Bible as a textual source, which has always been assumed in the secondary literature, Palestrina extracted his text from the Roman lectionary.
Antonio Cifra's 1619 Motecta ex sacris cantionibus was clearly based on Palestrina; however, Cifra made significant textual changes to reflect a Mariological, rather than a tropological, interpretation.
Adriano Banchieri's 1611 Vezzo di Perle approaches the text from a monastic point of view, while Severo Bonini's 1615 Affetti Spirituali uses musical dialogue to dramatically portray an allegorical reading (i.e., dealing with the love between the Church and Christ) of the Song.

Fall 2006 Ariosto Project   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The famous epic poem Orlando Furioso (Orlando Enraged), written by Ludovico Ariosto in 1516, served as the basis for operas by Vivaldi and Handel, but stanzas or whole scenes were set as madrigals, duets and solo songs by earlier composers.
Many scenes from the poem were also sung to extemporized melodies, and members of the Continuo Collective will present their own settings of Ariosto's stanzas in the spirit of the Renaissance 'cantastorie' (singing story-tellers).
Important for being not only the first opera composed by a woman, but also the first Italian opera performed outside Italy, it presents the story of the knight Ruggiero's escape from the magical island of the sorceress Alcina, drawn from Ariosto's famous epic poem, Orlando Furioso.

Since then, Vivaldi's compositions have enjoyed almost universal success, and the advent of historically informed performance has all but catapulted him to stardom once again.
In 1947, the Venetian businessman Antonio Fanna founded the Istituto Italiano Antonio Vivaldi, with the composer Gian Francesco Malipiero as its artistic director, and the purpose of promoting Vivaldi's music and putting out new editions of his works.
Vivaldi's music, together with Mozart's, Tchaikovsky's and Corelli's, has been included in the theories of Alfred Tomatis on the effects of music on human behavior, and used in music therapy.

Classics Today.com - Your Online Guide to Classical Music
Unfortunately, Antonio Salieri is best known as Mozart's great Viennese rival, but in his time he not only was more famous but also was a respected teacher--of Schubert and Beethoven, to name two of his more illustrious students.
Throughout, the accompaniments are as superbly thought-out and played as we could hope for--the wacky pizzicato strings and solo wind and brass lines in an aria from La Cifra, for instance, will delight, and the flute and oboe obbligatos in an aria from La fiera d Venezia are Mozartian.
Bartoli fans and lovers of great singing should not hesitate, but if you're allergic to Bartoli's mannerisms, beware: they're practically visible here.

He is one of a few Italian composers of the early 15th century whose works have survived; they are transitional between the trecento and the early Renaissance styles
After falling ill in 1726 he returned to Italy, but in 1732 he returned to Vienna to introduce some new works.
It is an indication of his reputation that his successor as court composer, Antonio Caldara, had to step aside to make place for Conti.

Certainly the Collegio Germanico was, as we have seen, at the forefront of such developments.
Graham Dixon has dealt with two of Pacelli's immediate successors there, Agostino Agazzari and Antonio Cifra, looking at the progressive tendencies in their small-scale concertato motets from a seventeenth-century perspective.
He has also dealt with the music of Giovanni Francesco Anerio, another composer very much in the vanguard of both small- and large-scale concertato writing.

With almost no exceptions, the music is marvelous, centred on works by Monteverdi, Giaches de Wert, Biagio Marini, and Sigismondo D’India, and include works by lesser-known composers such as Francesco Eredi, Francesco Fiamengo, and Giulio Santo Pietro de’ Negri.
The project derives from an entertainment of last summer called "Era la notte", after Antonio Cifra’s madrigal, given in the courtyard of the Steri Palace in Palermo.
Garrido’s seven singers, who take a variety of dramatic roles and sing in consort in the madrigals, are never less than good, often very good indeed, including a very fine low bass.

Cecilia Bartoli - The Salieri Album | ArkivMusic
After all, didn't you see the Vivaldi album with Italian early music rockers Il Giardino Armonico?
Well, with her latest release from Decca, Bartoli threatens to do for the much-maligned Antonio Salieri (who didn't really poison Mozart, by the way; that was just a publicity stunt he cooked up later) what she did for both of the aforementioned: put them on the operatic map.
The arias are hardly familiar, although the librettists might be: da Ponte and Casti were as much parts of fin-de-XVIIIeme-siecle society as Salieri, Beethoven, Goethe, Mozart, or Haydn.
