ANTONIO LOTTI (1667 ?-1740), Italian musical composer, was the son of Matteo Lotti, Kapellmeister to the court of Hanover.
He was born, however, at Venice and as a pupil of Legrenzi.

Lotti's entry into opera composition is marked by the performance of Il trionfo dell'innocenza in 1692.
In 1717 Lotti was engaged by the Crown Prince of Saxony, Friederich Augustus, who was in Venice as part of the Grand Tour with the specific instructions from his father the king to secure the services of singers for the court opera and church in preparation for his wedding in 1719.

ntonio Lotti (b Venice or Hanover c1667 - d1740), the son of Hanover's Kappellmeister, pupil of Legrenzi, and an inaugural singer in the choir of the musical fraternity of S. Cecilia in Venice, 1687.
From 1692 Lotti's career as opera composer commenced leading to the presentation of 21 such works of which six have survived.
Lotti's works were plagiarised and admired during his lifetime and remained significant repertoire for the choir of St Mark's Venice well into the early 19th century.

He produced sacred music both for St. Mark's and for the Ospedale degli incurabili, where he was active prior to Porpora's appointment in 1726.
He also composed some thirty stage works between 1692 and 1719, including Porsenna (1712), Polidoro (1714), and Alessandro Severo (1716, the first setting of Zeno's libretto),- several others were written for Dresden, where Lotti spent the years 1717-19, and for Vienna.
Burney reported being moved to tears by Lotti's music during a visit to Venice in 1770.

When the musical fraternity of S Cecilia was established at the Basilica of S Marco (act of 25 November 1687) Lotti, as an extra singer in the choir, was one of the first to sign its register.
On 30 May 1689 he began receiving a regular salary for singing alto; on 6 August 1690 he became an assistant to the second organist, on 31 May 1692 second organist, and on 17 August 1704 first organist, a position he held until 1736 when he was named primo maestro di cappella.
When the position became vacant on the death of Antonio Biffi in 1733 he failed to get a plurality of votes in competition with Antonio Pollarolo and Nicola Porpora (8 March 1733), and he had to wait three years to compete once more against Pollarolo, acting maestro since 1733.
