Antonio Pacinotti was born in Pisa on June 17, 1841.
Antonio Pacinotti was also Professor of Architecture and rural Hydraulics for several years, Member of the Academy of Lincei on 1898, Senator of Italian Parliament on 1905, President of Italian electro-technical Society on 1911.
Pacinotti wrapped a ring of iron with a continuous coil of wire to form an armature.

It was sent as a gift by this University to the «Scuola di Elettrotecnica Galileo Ferraris» of Torino (prof.
Grassi) after the homage paid to Pacinotti at the International Exhibition which took place in Torino in 1911; Pacinotti himself was present at the Exhibition.
He had already demonstrated, at the time of the first publication, that the machine was reversible, as it could work both as a dynamo and as a motor, to transform mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice-versa.

Gli studi su questa macchina furono pubblicati da Pacinotti sul n° 19 del Nuovo Cimento nel 1865 in modo esaustivo e completo riconoscendo il carattere di reversibilità della macchina da generatore a motore.

In the beginning, in fact, the largest and most valuable part of the collection comprised books and manuscripts on Galilean themes collected by Antonio Favaro (1847 - 1922), professor of Rational Mechanics at the University of Padova,and well-known promoter of the national edition of the works of Galileo.
Around the same time the library, (containig books, manuscripts archives and various other treasures) of Antonio Pacinotti (1841 - 1912), Professor of Physics at the University of Pisa and inventor of the dynamo and the electric motor, was donated to the Domus Galilaeana.
An original letter of Galileo to Paolo Sarpi (1604)concern the law of the fall of natural bodies is kept at Domus Galillæana.

Gramme, a Belgian, used Pacinotti's armature design to make efficient magneto generators in the 1860s and self-excited dynamos in the 1870s.
There he developed a ring armature design that was used by Gramme in motors and generators.
