Antonio Prohías (January 17, 1921 - February 24, 1998), born in Cuba, was a cartoonist most famous for creating the comic strip Spy vs. Spy for MAD Magazine.
In the late 1940s, Prohías began working at El Mundo, the most important newspaper in Cuba.
In place of the usual letters page, and in a parody of the typical art school advertisement, 12 MAD artists contribute their renditions of a horse, Prohias drawing it as a pair of white and fl chess knights glaring at each other.

Disposable Lit: Spy vs. Spy: The Complete Casebook
The most iconic of them all was Antonio Prohias, because aside from about a dozen other features he did for them in over twenty years, Prohias did exactly one thing: Spy vs. Spy.
Prohias was originally a political cartoonist in his native Cuba, but when Papa Castro made public statements identifying him by name as an enemy of the state, Prohias fled with his family to New York.
Thanks to his background, Prohias couldn't avoid making a political feature out of it, but instead of applying to any particular political situation, it became instead a statement on some eternal verities of politics: There is a White Spy.

Their creator, the late Antonio Prohias, a political cartoonist who fled Castro's Cuba in 1960, was a font of variations on the theme of having one spy meet violent death at the hands of the other.
He fled to the US from Cuba in 1959 to escape arrest and execution by Castro; this book does show us his earlier strip, "Tovarich," depicting a despicable Soviet dictator meant as indirect reference to the situation of Prohias's native country.
