Franz Anton Rosler (Francesco Antonio Rosetti) (Composer) - Short Biography
He adopted the Italian name Antonio Rosetti when he moved to Germany in 1773, to work as double bassist and eventually composer in the highly musical court of Kraft Ernst, Prince of Öttingen-Wallerstein.
It seems altogether appropriate to the confusion surrounding Rosetti's identity that the one picture of him is of questionable attribution, by an anonymous hand and taken from an original now lost.

In 1773 Rosetti left his native Bohemia and joined the Hofkapelle of Kraft Ernst, Prince von Öttingen-Wallerstein in Southern Germany.
In 1785 Rosetti took over the leadership of the orchestra from Joseph Reicha and around 1789 he left for Northern Germany to serve as Kapelmeister to the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in Ludwigslust.

Rosetti’s Oeuvre is amazingly extensive concerning the instrumentation.
This quintet is better known in the instrumentation for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and English horn in which the English horn was often replaced by a horn and a wind quintet therefore arose.
Since arranging was a component of the performance practice and music culture then and by such a famous musician as Punto was, the music is today not less essential.

INKPOT#66 CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: Concerto Köln - 18 November 1998
The concert began with the most well-known work of the Bohemian composer Antonio Rosetti (1750-1792), his Symphony in B major.
Rosetti's prolific compositional life undertook many orchestral and chamber works, characterised by captivating melodies, imaginative orchestration, rich harmonies, finely wrought motivic structures and cleverly employed counterpoint.
Though Rosetti (right) was known to have considered Haydn as a model during his life, his contemporaries ranked him with his more famous contemporary as well as Mozart.

Antonio Rosetti wrote seventeen concertos for the solo horn and seven for two horns.
This large output was due to the high standard of the players at the Court Orchestra of Wallerstein in Germany, where Rosetti was active.
It is entirely fitting that the disc should end with a bright and breezy F major concerto (notable also for a lovely woodwind episode in its Romanze).

Classical Net Review - Rosetti - Wind Partitas
Rosetti wrote music in many genres, but his music for winds is particularly abundant and felicitous.
A typical wind partita – for example, #8 on this CD – is scored for two oboes, two clarinets, two horns, one bassoon, and (presumably to buttress the music's harmonic foundations), one double bass.
The variety of Rosetti's inspiration becomes even more impressive when one is reminded that flutes in the 1780s (when these works were written) could not be adapted to music in many different keys as easily as their modern counterparts can be.

Antonio Vivaldi (1678?-1741) has been called “the most original and influential Italian composer of his generation.” The success of his formal, tonal, technical, and orchestral ideas is indicated by the vast number of his imitators during the first half of the 18th century.
Antonio Rosetti (1750-1792) was born Anton Rosler in Bohemia, but Italianized his name in the fashion of musicians of the time.
It is the ideal structure to appreciate Rosetti’s charm and wit.

The public loved Rosetti - and there is plenty of documentary evidence to show that his works were often played throughout Europe.
By the end of the 1790s, at least half of those of Rosetti's compositions that have come down to us had been published, some of them, moreover, by very well-established music publishers.
Today we know of the existence of over 400 works: more than 40 symphonies, about 60 concertos for different instruments (piano, violin, viola, flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon), upwards of 20 works for brass band, a lot of chamber music, pieces for piano, songs and sacred choral music.

The most talented of these composers was Kapellmeister Rosetti, born Anton Rössler in Leitmeritz, Bohemia.
The five partitas by Rosetti included in this edition illustrate the type of wind ensemble music favored by the Wallerstein court in the 1780s.
