Luis Vaez de Torres, a Portuguese sailor in the service of Spain, explores the entire south and west coast and sails through the Torres Strait which he discovered and from whom Torres Strait is named.

The success of the NSYO under Abreu's direction led to the establishment of youth orchestras in other Venezuelan States, which has grown into the National System of Children and Youth Orchestras of Venezuela, under the auspices of a State Foundation, FESNOJIV.
Abreu has been the Director of the Foundation since its establishment in 1994, before which he was for five years Venezuela's Minister for Culture and President of its National Council for Culture.

Born in 1939, Mr Abreu is the founder of the Sinfónica Nacional Infantil and Sinfónica Nacional Juvenil, pivotal elements of a nation-wide network of 102 youth orchestras and 55 children’s orchestras.
In 1995, Mr Abreu was named special UNESCO delegate for the development of a world-wide network system of youth and children’s orchestras and choirs.

On September 7, 2002, in Rio de Janeiro, Federal police agents arrested Antonio Gonçalves de Abreu, and his friends Márcio Cerqueira Gomes, 21, and Samuel Dias Cequeira, 29, and jailed them in the Plaza Mauá Federal Police Headquarters (Superintendência da Polícia Federal).
According to press sources, Antônio Gonçalves de Abreu was not injured when the federal police officers arrested him.
Countering the Federal Police´s version of the incident, Márcio Cerqueira Gomes, stated that he, Antônio, and Samuel were involved in a dispute with Officer Gustavo at 3:30am outside a disco.
