Antonov was one of three design bureaux asked to submit proposals to the Soviet Ministry of Defence for the replacement, and the bureau's general designer Oleg Antonov asked his deputy Vasili Teplov to become chief designer for the work.
Antonov was the first aircraft designer/ manufacturer to introduce a fly-by-wire system on a transport aircraft; the An-124 Ruslan which made its first flight in 1982.
Antonov calculates dig some 3,500 An-12s, C- I 30s and Transalls remain in service, and while the Ukrainian aircraft would not even be considered by some countries in the market for a replacement, it still leaves considerable opportunities.

The company is named after Oleg Antonov, its founder and head designer of An-2, An-24, An-22 and other legendary planes.
As a result, Antonov airplanes were often constructed by aerospace companies in Kharkiv (Ukraine), Novosibirsk (Russia), and Tashkent (Uzbekistan).

This interesting design (the radar disc was mounted atop a forward-swept, V-shaped set of tail fins) was cancelled in favour of Yakovlev's Yak-44, a twin turboprop apparently very similar to the Grumman E-2 Hawkeye.
The official reason given was that a turboprop was more efficient for the AEW role than a jet (although your FAQ compiler suspects that the fact that Yakovlev is a Russian company while Antonov is Ukrainian probably had something to do with it too).

The Antonov An-124 Ruslan was designed in the mid-1970s to replace the turboprop-powered Antonov An-22 "Cock".

Among many planes presented in flight exhibition was one I never will forget, the Antonov 225, one of the world's largest airplanes ever build.
It was presented with the soviet pendant of the space shuttle called "Buran", of a much narrower size as the US shuttle is. "Buran" never flew on commercial flights, it absolved only one unmanned testing flight.
In the early eighties, the Antonov design bureau in Kiev (known for their outstanding performances in developing and producing heavy cargo planes, remember An-22 of the mid-sixties and the An-124) was ordered to design a plane able to carry the former Soviet Union's space shuttle.
