Antonov Airlines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Antonov Airlines is a cargo airline based in Kiev, Ukraine.
The airline was established and started operations in 1989 when it entered into a marketing agreement with Air Foyle to market Antonov An-124 cargo charters worldwide.
This led to the Antonov design bureau (100% owners of the airline) obtaining its own operating certificate.

Antonov An-225 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The An-225 is an extension of Antonov's earlier An-124.
In 1989 a holding company was set up by the Antonov Design Bureau as a heavy airlift shipping corporation under the name "Antonov Airlines", based in Kiev, Ukraine and operating from London Stansted Airport in partnership with Air Foyle HeavyLift.
The company initiated operations with a fleet of four An-124-100s and three Antonov An-12s, but by the late 1990s it was apparent that there was a need for aircraft larger than the An-124.

 Antonov - Wikicompany
Antonov's airplanes range from the rugged Antonov An-2 biplane (which itself is comparatively large for a biplane) through the Antonov An-28 reconnaissance aircraft to the massive Antonov An-124 and An-225 cargo carriers (the latter being the world's biggest aircraft in service).
Whilst less famous, the Antonov An-24, An-26 and An-30 series of twin turboprop, high winged, passenger transport aircraft are important for domestic air services particularly in parts of the world once led by communist governments.
The Antonov An-72 and An-74 series of small jetliners is slowly replacing that fleet and a larger Antonov An-70 freighter is under certification.

Antonov's airplanes range from the rugged An-2 'Colt' biplane (which itself is comparatively large for a biplane) through the Antonov An-28 reconnaissance aircraft to the massive An-124 'Condor' and An-225 'Cossack' strategic airlifters (the latter being the world's biggest aircraft in service).

These duties were formerly performed by a modified M-4 Molot bomber, but this aircraft did not have the payload capabilities required by the rocketry developments of the 1980s.
As a result, Antonov was called upon to develop a new aircraft capable of carrying the Buran space shuttle, components of the Energiya rocket, or other large cargos required by the construction and mining industries.
To minimize the development effort, Antonov used the existing An-124 as a starting point but lengthened the fuselage, increased the wingspan, added two additional engines, and redesigned the tail with twin vertical tailfins.

The pictures that Reuters and AP show indicate that the plane used is indeed a Russian-flagged airliner--the Russian flag is clearly visible on the fron top of the fuselage.
: There are only two airlines in the world which use these planes--one is based somewhere in Russia (and can clearly be considered a Russian plane) and the other is somewhere in the United Kingdom--which is probably an offshoot of the Antonov Design Bureau--and another example of how ukrainian assets has disappeared from Ukraine.
