Antonov An-72 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Designed as a STOL transport, the Antonov An-72 (NATO reporting name Coaler) was intended as a replacement for the An-26, but variants have found success as commercial freighters.
An interesting design feature of the An-72 and An-74 is the use of the Coanda effect to improve STOL performance, utilizing engine exhaust gases blown over the wing's upper surface to boost lift.
The An-72 bears similar resemblance to an earlier aircraft, the experimental Boeing YC-14.

 Antonov AN-72
The Antonov An-72 (NATO name Coaler) was designed in the mid-1970’s as a replacement for the An-26 (NATO name Curl), a turboprop powered light tactical transport aircraft that served in great numbers in almost every Soviet bloc country.
The An-72 is an unusual design with its two 14,3000lb ZMKB Progress D-36 turbofans mounted high on the wing, enabling the engine exhaust to be directed over the wing to improve STOL performance.
To resolve this problem the designers came up with a novel and unique solution; the An-72 was completely re-designed and swept forward, rather than backward, and the radome housing the Kvant early warning radar was attached on top of the tailfin.

The Antonov An-72 and An-74 series of small jetliners is slowly replacing that fleet and a larger Antonov An-70 freighter is under development.
Antonov's airplanes range from the rugged Antonov An-2 biplane (which itself is comparatively large for a biplane) through the Antonov An-28 reconnaissance aircraft to the massive Antonov An-124 and An-225 cargo carriers (the latter being the world's biggest aircraft in service).
Whilst less famous, the Antonov An-24, An-26 and An-30 series of twin turboprop, high winged, passenger transport aircraft are important for domestic air services particularly in parts of the world once led by communist governments.
