Cleopatra and her supporters made much use of prophecies in an attempt to convince the superstitious population of Egypt and of the Roman East that a new age would dawn under the rule of Cleopatra Isis-Venus and Antony Dionysus-Osiris.
In exchange for providing Antony with funds and material, Cleopatra demanded (and was granted) the execution of her sister Arsinoe, the pretender Ptolemy VIV and of the admiral Sarapion, all of whom threatened both her own crown and the throne she hoped to pass to her children.
Cleopatra and Antony’s youngest child, Ptolemy Philadelphos, often portrayed in Macedonian garb, was awarded Syria, Cilicia and the area between the Euphrates and the Hellespont.

The tragic love story of ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, although surrounded by war and negotiations, ends in a manner befitting Romeo and Juliet.
In the end, like Juliet, Cleopatra fakes her death to which the distraught Antony tries to kill himself; I guess he learned that from Romeo as well.
ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA is not the greatest Shakespeare story but this Trevor Nunn production is great.

Studying Antony and Cleopatra for A-Level, I've seen many a production of this on DVD or alike.
This video has a deceptively simple feel about the way it is staged, yet this is entirely in keeping with its original presentation, using as it does the apparent limits of the theatre to reinforce the intimacy of the stage setting for its characters.
As Jenny Aggutter says in her introduction to the video, some of its proceeds go to NCH Action for Children, so all in all it is money well spent.

This is a brilliant performance of Antony and Cleopatra.....
Janet Suzman as Cleopatra is at least as fine a Cleopatra as Liz Taylor (and infinitely superior to Leonor Varela's embarrassingly adolescent portrayal), but Richard Johnson as Antony is so marvelous that you can only think of Richard Burton as an unappealing weakling after watching Johnson.
"Antony and Cleopatra" is one of Shakespeare's greatest plays where Marc Antony and Cleopatra, both with glorious pasts, have to cope with their dwindling fortunes.
