Boston.com / Sports / Smith the straight answer
Smith rushed for 962 yards last season, averaging 3.9 yards per carry and scoring six times.
Basically, Smith was the same back in 2002 that he was in 2001, and it is the belief in this corner that he will be the same back in 2003, if given a chance and used properly.
But Smith runs hard, is consistent, and when he gets his shoulders square to the line of scrimmage and moves forward between the tackles, defenders had better wrap him up or he will run through them for big yardage.

Smith answering the bell for Patriots
Smith hardly scored a KO over the Dolphins' stout run defense, but neither did he get floored in the first round.
Smith picked up only three first downs on the ground, but two of them came in the first quarter when the Pats dominated possession, running 22 plays to Miami's six and hogging the ball for 12:20 to Miami's 2:40.
Smith is much smaller (6-2, 232) but that's ideal size for a late-season, bad-weather back, and the Pats put him to good use in this one.

Smith had a team option (along with a $500,000 bonus) that was declined by the Pats.
Belichick's statement about Smith made it sound like he won't be back, which kind of surprised me. Kevin Faulk clearly can't handle things by himself, though, and Mike Cloud couldn't start for any team in the NFL, so the Pats will be looking for someone to replace Smith.
The wierd thing about Antowain is that he might be pretty good that first year, but, his history in NE and Buffalo suggests that he dogs it in year 2 and on..
