He was a traditional unionist and resigned his South Antrim seat in 1985 in protest at the Anglo-Irish Agreement between London and Dublin.
He was assembly member for South Antrim from 1982-86, a member of Newtownabbey Borough Council from 1981-83 and Newtownabbey Mayor in 1983.
UUP South Belfast MP Martin Smyth said: "He was a good colleague, who in his consistency of representing his people in South Antrim didn't seek the limelight and national publicity, but was an assiduous performer of his tasks."
