The bay, an arm of the Indian Ocean, is one of the world's finest natural harbors; its location, however, has hindered its development as a major port.
Antsiranana is a transshipment point between coastal and ocean vessels, coffee, corn, peanuts, and cattle being the items of export.
The area was ceded to France in 1885, at which time the town became the capital of the French colony; France maintained a naval base there from 1901 to 1972.

Antsiranana Diocese saw its first mission church started on August 10, 1889, in Namakia, and the Cathedral of St Laurent in Antananarivo, Ambohimanoro, was inaugurated that same year.
The Diocese of Antsiranana was formed on January 12, 1969, with the Rt Rev Gabriel Josoa as the first Bishop.
So now as the third bishop of Antsiranana Diocese, I continue in the line starting with the SPG (Society for the Propagation of the Gospel) missionary, Archdeacon Chiswell, in 1872 and the CMS (Church Missionary Society) missionaries, the Rev Campbell and the Rev Holding a little earlier.

 Human shield used in Madagascar
Around 70 people who had been chained to the railings of the governor's office in Antsiranana on Monday were later taken to a military camp by their captors.
But AFP reports that Antsiranana, which is heavily defended by backers of Mr Ratsiraka, is expected to put up a stiff fight.
Antsiranana in the north, and Tamatave, in the east, are both key ports, and the last two provincial capitals still controlled by Mr Ratsiraka.

On 2 March, Olivier Ratsimba and Lalason Rajaobelina, supporters of Marc Ravalomanana in the island of Nosy-Be, part of the northern province of Antsiranana, were separately arrested in their homes and beaten severely by armed security officers and supporters of Didier Ratsiraka.
They were detained in the “2nd RFI” military camp next to the office of the governor, where they were beaten with gun butts and stones, threatened with death, humiliated and robbed of their personal belongings.
In April at least 19 people were arrested by Ratsiraka security forces and supporters in separate instances in Antsiranana province because of their perceived support for Marc Ravalomanana during the elections.

Managed to catch that early morning flight and after the plane stopped first at Nosy Be (which to my ear sounds as if it is pronounced Lucy Bay) we arrived at Diego.
Diego is the old colonial name while it's Malagasy name is Antsiranana though many refer to it still as Diego.
I do not think the people are much too bothered what it is called.
