Strong, who was an old acquaintance of mine, I first came to what is now Otto township in December, 1845, having in view the purchase of the pine timber land (at the head-waters of the creek branches), and also the location of a colony of eastern farmers and lumberman.
His father settled in Otto township, May 5, 1855, locating on the farm now occupied by the subject of this sketch, which, with the assistance of his sons, he cleared and improved.
He was in the lumber business in Otto township, the first eight years of his residence, and for a number of years worked at his trade in Olean, N.Y. Since 1878 he has been a producer of oil, and has twelve producing wells on his farm, seven of which he opened.

Antwerp Township was first settled by Joel Tomlinson in 1834 and Joseph Woodman in 1835.
The Township was organized in 1837 and named by its then oldest inhabitant, Harmon Van Antwerp, after Antwerp, Belguim.
On January 5, 1849 the office was moved and renamed Mattawan.

In 1850 Gilbert was found in Ida, Monroe County, Michigan, with his mother, Marilda, and five of his siblings, Abraham, Henry, Christopher, Lodusky, and Marilda.
Marilda was in Michigan by 1846 so it seems likely that her husband, David, died in New York between 1843 and 1845, but his death has not been found.
In 1858 Gilbert and Mariah bought land in the Village of Mattawan in Antwerp Township.
