The anusvara is commonly used in conjunction with a vowel sign that extends above the headstroke.
The anusvara is written above the headstroke, at the right-hand end of the preceding character.
Note that the anusvara is still applied when the previous character has its own vowel sign.

Banda Gelek explains that the visarga and anusvara are both parts of letters, as indeed they are in the writing of Indian languages.
The anusvara indicates that the last "ya" is nasalised, such as in the pronunciation of syllables such as "om" and "hum".
Notice that the crescent shaped visarga is associated here with the sun, and is therefore usually red in colour, and that the circular shaped bindu (anusvara) is associated with the moon, and is therefore usually white.

In other circumstances, pronounce anusvAra as anusvAra, i.e., shut your mouth, relax your tongue and let the voiced breath pass purely through the nose.
My understanding is as follows: 1) If the anusvara is followed by a consonant ('ka' to 'ma') it takes the sound of the last consonant in the specific varga.
In Kerala, the anusvara is sometimes pronounced as the full 'ma' and not just 'm'.

In the list below both spellings are correct and equivalent, although anusvara is preferred in the case of the first two: रंग= रङ्ग, पंजाबी= पञ्जाबी, हिंदी= हिन्दी, लंबा= लम्बा.
Anusvara is still applied when previous character has its own vowel sign.
The logic behind this is that the nukta modifies the character, whereas the vowel signs and anusvara or candrabindu modify the syllable.

I try not to use an anusvara in the middle of a word.
In my experience, reading the version with the half-form is less prone to error; the anusvara in the middle of a word is easy to miss whilst speed-reading.
I will use an anusvara if it appears at the end of a word.

In Kannada script, the inherent vowel of a syllable is sup-pressed by a virama which is a small superscript mark on the syllable.
Originally devised to indicate vowel nasalization, the ring-shaped anusvara is used for nasal consonants in Modern Kannada.
Words are separated by a space and the end of a sentence is signaled by a dot as in Euro-pean practice.

The sounds are traditionally listed in the order vowels, diphthongs, anusvara and visarga, stops and nasals (starting in the back of the mouth and moving forward), and finally the liquids and fricatives, written in IAST as follows (see the tables below for details):
Visarga ḥ ः is an allophone of r and s, and anusvara ṃ, Devanagari ं of any nasal, both in pausa (ie, the nasalized vowel).
The exact pronunciation of the three sibilants may vary, but they are distinct phonemes.

The second letter is clearly 've' and the third letter is a clear 'ta'.
If we read it before 'ta' the inscription would read as 'Koventa', but if we read the anusvara after 'ta', the reading 'Kovetan', is possible.
