Topic: Anvil Crawler

  Lightning - Wikipedia
Cloud-to-ground lightning is a lightning discharge between a cumulonimbus cloud and the ground initiated by the downward-moving leader stroke.
One special type of cloud-to-ground lightning is anvil lightning, which is sometimes called positive charge lightning, since it emanates from the anvil top of a cumulonimbus cloud where the ice crystals are positively charged.
In anvil lightning, the leader stroke issues forth in a nearly horizontal direction till it veers toward the ground.

Anvil Crawler - [Slang], a lightning discharge occurring within the anvil of a thunderstorm, characterized by one or more channels that appear to crawl along the underside of the anvil.
Anvil Rollover - [Slang], a circular or semicircular lip of clouds along the underside of the upwind part of a back-sheared anvil, indicating rapid expansion of the anvil.

Thunderstorm anvils are a form of cirrus cloud, but most cirrus clouds are not associated with thunderstorms.
A cumuliform anvil arises from rapid spreading of a thunderstorm updraft, and thus implies a very strong updraft.

Mushroom - [Slang], a thunderstorm with a well-defined anvil rollover, and thus having a visual appearance resembling a mushroom.
Such use of the term technically is incorrect, but in general it refers to a pattern characterized by widespread clouds and steady precipitation on the cool side of a front or other boundary.
Visual characteristics often include a rain-free base (with or without a wall cloud), tail cloud, flanking line, overshooting top, and back-sheared anvil, all of which normally are observed in or near the right rear or southwest part of the storm (Fig.

It didn't take long for the storm, which had seemed so small and innocent at first, to reshape itself to a well-organized and large-scale thunderstorm with inflow from the south (where we were) and a dark downdraft with precipitation to our north.

This is one of my all-time personal favorites, mainly because of the variety of lightning on display: a split-channel CG, along with a mixture of connected and disconnected "anvil crawlers." This lightning blazed through a region of light rain trailing a mesoscale convective system (MCS), which was moving SSE away from the scene.
There is no place better than the central U.S. plains for photographing "anvil crawlers," because of the frequency of MCSs, and the lack of visibility obstruction by haze, low clouds, trees and terrain.
And no photograph can possibly capture the spectacular majesty of lightning filaments branching across the sky in every direction.

The intracloud lightning, known as an anvil crawler, is the most common form of lightning, with the electrical charge contained within a single cumulonimbus cloud.
