Noyakuk was incarcerated at this correctional center as a result of his arrest on April 12, 2001 for two misdemeanors and a probation violation, all unrelated to the homicide.
Corrections officers allowed Noyakuk to dress, and then they took Noyakuk to a small room adjacent to the correctional centers booking office, where the two troopers were waiting.
Schied testified that she went to the correctional center shortly after noon on the 16th, intending to interview Noyakuk, but when she arrived, she discovered that Noyakuk had just had an interview with a mental health worker and he was emotionally upset.

TEAM was established by the 1997 Synod Assembly and directed to raise funds to financially support expansion of existing ministries and encourage the development of new ministries within the Alaska Synod.
As of May 2003, three groups of students grew in faith, spiritual development and pastoral care skills through the Ministry Training Program which began in 2000 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Nome under the leadership of Pastor Frank Macht.
The participants, seminarians, pastors, a missionary, a physician, a teacher's aide, and a chaplain, some from Nome and others from far away, served as volunteer chaplains in Nome facilities such as Anvil Mountain Correctional Center, Nome Youth Facility, Norton Sound Regional Hospital, Quaayanna Care Center and Bering Sea Women's Group and in Teller.
