Anwarul Karim Chowdhury was appointed in March 2002 by the Secretary-General of the United Nations as Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States.
Chowdhury was designated as the Secretary-General of the International Meeting for the ten-year review of the Barbados Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of the Small Island Developing States held in Mauritius from 10-14 January 2005.
Chowdhury served as President of the Security Council, President of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Executive Board and Vice-President of the Economic and Social Council of the UN in 1997 and 1998.

 Press Conference at Opening of PrepCom for ICPD+5 UNGASS
Ambassador Anwarul Karim Chowdhury was Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations.
Chowdhury explained that at the preparatory committee plenary, delegation after delegation had stressed the two sets of commitments made in Cairo -- the commitments of developing countries to introduce national policies and measures, and those of developed countries to contribute resources.
Chowdhury recalled the Convention on the right of migrants and their families, and new concern had arisen with regard to the treatment of female migrant workers.

A complete package would bring benefits of up to $8 billion a year for the economies of the 50 least developed countries, with $6.4 billion of that attributable to increased exports, said Anwarul Karim Chowdhury, UN under secretary-general for least developed countries, which have a per capita income of less than $750.
Chowdhury noted that many of the world's poorest countries, most of them in Africa, have no tradable products for Western markets and urged richer nations to increase so-called "aid-for-trade" donations - money meant to help developing countries to strengthen their trading capabilities.
Some least developed countries are particularly vulnerable and Chowdhury urged greater protection for those which have no access to the sea, as transporting goods to ports makes their exports up to 50 percent more expensive when they reach developed country markets.

 UNESCO and Least Developed Countries
Chowdhury served as President of the Security Council, President of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Executive Board, and, for more than 10 years, as the Coordinator for the Least Developed Countries in New York.
Chowdhury was born in 1943 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Chowdhury is the recipient of the U Thant Peace Award and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Gandhi Gold Medal for Culture and Peace.

 UN Security Council team to visit Kosovo, Belgrade
The council mission hoped to see how the UN Mission in Kosovo, known as UNMIK, was coping with the political and security challenges in the run-up to the first Kosovo-wide vote, said Ambassador Anwarul Karim Chowdhury of Bangladesh, mission leader and this month's council president.
Chowdhury said the mission would hold talks with Kostunica in Belgrade on Monday as well as with Prime Minister Zoran Zizic and Foreign Minister Goran Svilanovic.
But Chowdhury said the council mission would largely steer clear of the problems in neighboring Macedonia, where the government is attempting to put down a four-month-old rebellion by ethnic Albanian guerrillas.

According to a press release from New York, Anwarul Karim Chowdhury regretted lack of adequate follow up of the Programme of Action which, he said, should be particularly focused.
Ambassador Chowdhury, who is also the Coordination of the LDCs, told the meeting that three core issues of importance for LDCs are free access to markets in the developed countries, cancellation of their debt burden and increase of official development assistance.
Ambassador Chowdhury is a vice-chairman of the 10-member Bureau of the Preparatory Committee charged with the preparation of the conference, including the preparation of the forward looking document for the LDCs.

 Few Graduate From U.N. Programme for the Poorest
Chowdhury pointed out that "development is a long process and it takes time to show results".
After five long years, the programme will be reviewed at a high-level ministerial meeting scheduled to take place at the United Nations Sep. 14-19, on the eve of the opening of the 61st session of the General Assembly.
The needs of the LDCs are of such magnitude, and also because the development process takes a while to bear fruit, that it would be inappropriate to term the slow progress in some areas as failures, he added.
