TheMovieBoy Review: Any Given Sunday (1999)
Thus far, several reviews for "Any Given Sunday," Oliver Stone's fully charged ode to professional football, have stated that only those viewers who are fans of football will be able to enjoy it.
Although I didn't like "Any Given Sunday" and I despise football, it is certainly one of the major pictures of its type that has a large chance to be enjoyed by several different sections of the adult population, whether they care for the sport or not.
The Sharks are on a dismal losing streak and Christina, new to the profession, will stop at nothing to get positive results as the playoffs wind down, partially out of trying to please her deceased father, and also because she is quickly losing sight of the things that are most important in her life.

Any Given Sunday - a Movie Review by The Phantom Tollbooth
Without having any guidelines at all, he is free to whip this universe around in any way he possibly can, and in this case he does so with such great flair and craftsmanship that we end up enjoying the ride a little bit more than we actually should.
It makes it hard for one to feel any sort of sympathy for the players, even when they are suffering at the hands of the team physician Harvey Mandrake (James Wood.) A realist to a fault, he drugs, dopes and downplays injuries, all in the "best interests" of the players.
Oliver Stone is an undeniable talent, however, and in Any Given Sunday he is also rewarded by a cast of great actors, and I include in that group some of the cameos by actual NFL legends.

Oliver Stone: Our Greatest Film Director
Any Given Sunday is clearly the most mainstream film that Oliver Stone has ever directed, and by the end, it's also the most hopeful of all Stone films.
In this way, Any Given Sunday is very similar to Stone's Vietnam films, where he placed the camera directly into combat and made us disoriented, experiencing what the soldier felt.
Any Given Sunday is a movie experience that all sports fans should taste.

 Review: Any Given Sunday
A case in point is Any Given Sunday, which, despite a potentially engaging story and a number of good performances, is at times unwatchable.
Stone is an egomaniac; it's impossible to watch Any Given Sunday and not ponder the director's role in piecing together the film.
Any Given Sunday is also about the warrior fraternity of football players, and how they cope with the inevitable end of their careers.

Any Given Sunday Movie Review by Anthony Leong
With "Any Given Sunday", director Oliver Stone ("U-Turn") dissects the glory and decadence of football, as seen through the stunning victories and stinging defeats of the fictitious Miami Sharks.
"Any Given Sunday" starts off promisingly enough as an insightful commentary on the state of the sport, as Stone takes us through the ins-and-outs of professional football, from the snap decisions made on the field to the executive decisions made in the owner's office.
However, given its contradictory narrative, possibly seizure-inducing overdone mix of images and noise, and patience-testing running time, "Any Given Sunday" does not warrant a recommendation, as much as I would like what Stone has done in the past.

 Movie Review: 'Any Given Sunday'
The game sequences in "Any Given Sunday" simply rock and make us feel as close as most of us will get to the experience of playing pro football.
He doesn't go off any deep ends here, letting issues take a back seat to his characters, which may be what makes the film so accessible.
But "Any Given Sunday" is, after all, just about football and not anything important.

Warner originally released Any Given Sunday on DVD in September of 2000, as a single-disc edition with the longer director's cut, a documentary and a music video.

Some have criticized the football action in "Any Given Sunday" for being too broken, cut, or not able to be made sense of in the context of logical football action.
The downside to this, though, is that I did have to adjust the volume down during periods of intense action and back up during lone dialogue scenes(which there happen to be only a few of without music or accompanying effects).

Any Given Sunday is a rough movie, both in terms production and in content.
Still, Any Given Sunday is an entertaining movie, and fans of football, Oliver Stone, and movies overloaded with dizzying amounts of music and testosterone will no doubt be pleased by the time the credits roll.

Those are, incredibly, the words of Cristie Kerr, who apparently executed the way she wanted to on Sunday, shooting a final-round 70 with only one bogey.
For the day, Kerr hit only half of the fairways and half of the greens in regulation, but her 28 putts were three fewer than she took in any other round and more than made up the difference between her and the second-place finishers.
Storm was the 1999 British Amateur champion and holed the clinching putt for the GB&I squad in that year's Ryder Cup, but while teammates such as Paul Casey and Luke Donald took a direct path to stardom, Storm was, uh, detoured, to say the least.

Oliver Stone's ``Any Given Sunday'' is a smart sports movie almost swamped by production overkill.
There's a stunning moment when he considers retirement and is ferociously challenged by his wife (Lauren Holly), who won't hear of it; he complains, ``ever since college, people have been telling me what to do.'' Even at 170 minutes, ``Any Given Sunday'' barely manages to find room for some of its large cast.
It's as if the second unit came back with lots of full-frame shots of anonymous football players plowing into one another in closeup, and Stone and his editors thought they could use that to mask their lack of substantial, strategic, comprehensible sports action footage.

"Any Given Sunday" / a review from Christian Spotlight on the Movies
Sunday is a film about the pressures of aging.
It’s given in this movie that being an alcoholic, visiting a prostitute, and deserting your family for your career are all noble and wonderful things to do.
The movie is not by any means as motivational as “Rudy” or “Rocky”, but should be enjoyed by most football players.
