The northernmost city in Henan, Anyang borders Puyang to the east, Hebi and Xinxiang to the south, and the provinces of Shanxi and Hebei to its west and north respectively.
Anyang is the site of the ancient Shang Dynasty (1600 BC - 1046 BC) capital known as Yinxu, or "the ruin of Yin" - the last capital of Shang Dynasty that was annihilated by the Martial King (Wu Wang) of Zhou Dynasty in the 11th century BC.
Anyang's Tangyin County was the seat of Yue Village, birth place of the famous Song Dynasty general Yue Fei.
