The terrain at Anzio consisted of rolling, often wooded farm country on a narrow coastal plain extending north from the town of Terracina to across the Tiber River.

Once the breakout occurred, the Anzio units were to drive east through the Velletri Gap to Valmontone, cut Highway 6, the main German route of retreat, and trap the bulk of the enemy forces withdrawing north through the Liri valley.

USS Anzio, At Sea -- USS Anzio (CG 68) came to the rescue of a Pakistan-flagged dhow in distress in the Arabian Sea on Feb. 13 while conducting maritime security operations (MSO) in the 5th Fleet area of operations.
Anzio crewmember Seaman Deepak Kumar translated to the boarding officer that the master of the motor vessel said he was appreciative of Anzio’s aid and kindness in helping his crew and vessel.
Anzio, part of the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group, departed Naval Station Norfolk on Oct. 3 for a regularly scheduled deployment in support of MSO and entered the 5th Fleet area of operations Oct. 30.

The Cemetery lies 5 kilometres north of Anzio town on the No.207 and Commission signs are visible 150 metres from the cemetery.
Operations in January 1944 landed troops behind the German lines at Anzio, but defences were well organised, and a breakthrough was not actually achieved until May. The site of the cemetery originally lay close to a casualty clearing station.
Burials were made direct from the battlefield after the landings at Anzio and later, after the Army had moved forward, many graves were brought in from the surrounding country.

Anzio played a vital role in the capture of Rome by giving me the means to employ a double-handed punch - from the beachhead and from Cassino - which caught the Germans in a pincer movement.

 The Battle of Anzio 23 January — 25 May 1944
The Regimental Day of the 1st Battalion The King's Shropshire Light Infantry, Anzio Day, was chosen to mark the grueling four months battle at Anzio in 1944 before the allied breakout to crush the enemy in Italy.
To this effect a British American force, consisting of a division apiece was landed upon the beaches of Anzio on January 22nd in the early hours of the morning.
Also sharing the rigours of Anzio were the men of the 1st and 9th Battalions, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, who came as part of allied reinforcements to the beleaguered forces prior to the break-out, which was completed on 25th May, four months after the initial landings.
