 Anzio Beachhead: The Breakthrough
The Anzio landing of VI Corps as originally conceived was to be the prelude to a short-term operation that would lead to a quick junction with an advancing main Fifth Army.
One of the latter was popularly known as the "Anzio Express," also as "Anzio Annie." These big guns, not to be confused with the smaller railroad guns which the Germans had employed during February, were first reported in action on 24 March.
During the first eleven days of the spring offensive, the character of the Anzio front remained unchanged; but behind the forward lines, the forces of VI Corps were busily preparing for their part in the big Allied drive.

 Anzio Annie: A huge WW2 artillery piece
There were two guns that made up the German K-5 RR battery that shelled the Anzio Beachhead.
Together, they composed "Anzio Annie." When the Allies broke out of the Anzio Beachhead, the guns were moved to Civitavecchia, located just north of Rome.
This particular gun is the one that was used in the shelling of the US troops during their landing at Anzio, Italy.

The Anzio plan was temporarily shelved, but when General Eisenhower was reassigned to Operation OVERLORD in early January 1944, he relinquished command of Allied forces in the Mediterranean to General Sir Henry M. Wilson, after which the British view dominated planning.
By 1 February the port of Anzio was in full operation and improved air defenses had reduced the effectiveness of constant Luftwaffe sorties against the beachhead.
Anzio did not achieve its initial objectives to outflank the Gustav Line and lead to the capture of Rome.

Upon receiving word of the landings, Kesselring immediately dispatched elements of the 4th Parachute and Hermann Goering Divisions south from the Rome area to defend the roads leading north from the Alban Hills.
A quick link-up with Fifth Army forces in the south was believed still possible even though German resistance all along the perimeter of the beachhead was becoming stronger.
The 135,000 troops of the Fourteenth Army surrounding Anzio could not be moved elsewhere, nor could they be used to make the already formidable Gustav Line virtually impregnable.

It wasn't until the Allies broke out of the "Anzio Beachhead" and sent the Germans scurrying that the secret was revealed.
Although both guns had been extensively damaged, Allied forces were able to salvage the Leopold and after reconstruction of the railway, moved the gun to Naples for shipment to the United States.

"Anzio Annie" was the name of the German railroad gun that was used against the American troops during the amphibious landings at Anzio, Italy during World War II.
I recognized as long as I was in the air, Anzio Annie stayed in its hiding place.
It is interesting to note that Annie's days were over as our troops advanced through Anzio, took the next stronghold, Velletri, and on to Rome.

ANZIO held sea trials off the California coast and was ready to sail for the western Pacific on 16 September and entered the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard for a tender availability.
ANZIO left the Philippines on 6 July to begin what proved to be her last stint of combat duty.
ANZIO was struck from the Navy list on 1 March 1959 and sold to the Master Metals Co. on 24 November 1959.

Although from the mid-19th century, people started considering imparting mobility to large caliber artillery pieces by placing them on special railway mountings, it was WWII that gave the impetus to making the railway gun an important part of many European armories.
Allied forces were able to salvage the Leopold, and after reconstruction of the railway, moved the gun to Naples for shipment to the States.
"Anzio Annie" as the gun was known to Allied troops, is the only German railroad gun known to have survived World War II, and it is currently on display at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Aberdeen, Maryland.

This project was still in the planning stages when the war ended, but many of its basic features were to be seen in the American 25cm M65 gun which appeared some years later.
The American nickname for one German 28cm Kanone K5(E) railway gun was "Anzio Annie" or "The Anzio Express".
Anzio Annie was blown up by the Germans, to avoid its capture.

Time blurred - Anzio could be compared with a “lost weekend.” War service, especially in a place like Anzio is like living in the city - you seldom know what your neighbor does, much less of what happens a block away.
A few years ago a bus load of we Anzio veterans were touring the Citadel in Charleston SC and the tour guide was expansive about General Mark Clark being buried on the campus.
One of the most important to me is the Anzio Beachhead Veterans of WW II and have attended many reunions.

Come in from the east side of the town, move slowly, and use your bombing strikes and heavy artillery bombardments to eliminate a lot of the infantry near the depot.

In the gathering dusk the air raids increased; there were several near misses, and we knew we were in for another night.

There are acres of tanks and armored vehicles, domestic and foreign, of all eras, Anzio Annie, a 280mm Atomic Cannon, a 16" coastal defence gun, a V1 buzz bomb and a V2 rocket, and a great indoor museum with a fine small arms collection!
Annie was the design basis for our 280mm Atomic Cannon.
