As the Commanding Officer of the AEGIS Cruiser ANZIO, I have the pleasure of ensuring the combat readiness of a billion-dollar warship and her 350 talented Officers, Chief Petty Officers and Sailors.
Asking my officers to execute the tasks ANZIO is capable of performing without giving them the personnel resources to perform the job -- while compressing their time between deployments – is also a recipe for poor retention given the strength of our economy.
Today’s junior officer is superb, but without adequate compensation for the responsibility they undertake on a daily basis and the time away from home they must endure, this young talent pool will invariably look elsewhere for employment, the cascading effect of which will negatively impact those who choose to remain.
