The Anzio plan was temporarily shelved, but when General Eisenhower was reassigned to Operation OVERLORD in early January 1944, he relinquished command of Allied forces in the Mediterranean to General Sir Henry M. Wilson, after which the British view dominated planning.
By 1 February the port of Anzio was in full operation and improved air defenses had reduced the effectiveness of constant Luftwaffe sorties against the beachhead.
The news of the fall of Rome was quickly forgotten in the euphoria of the D-Day landings in Normandy on 6 June.

Having served previously with the Rangers in North Africa (Kasserine Pass) and Italy (Anzio) alongside Captain Miller, Technical Sergeant Mike Horvath (Tom Sizemore) was a member of Company C, 2nd Ranger Battalion on June 6th, 1944.
The 1st and 3rd Ranger Battalions were lost at Anzio, and it is unlikely that Horvath or Miller were among the few who escaped death or capture (a majority of the 1st and 3rd Rangers were taken as prisoners of war).
It is possible that both men served with the 1st Rangers at Kasserine Pass, switched to the 4th Rangers for the Anzio landings, and were then transferred to the 2nd Rangers for the Normandy assault.

The "Rock" fought it's way into Germany, and at the end of the War was one of the few American Divisions to have been in combat continuously from the start to the end of the American involvement, and still end up in Germany at the finish.
