Anzio continued its resurgence with an excellent showing of 18 players participating between Tuesday and Saturday using the beautiful reprinted Anzio maps that Tom Oleson provided last year.
This is probably the main charm of the game, and it keeps longtime fans of the game and rogues like Dan Dolan coming back year after year for more.
Paul commented that he was tired of Tom Oleson, Bob Ryan and Mike Sincavage winning the Anzio plaques, so he decided to quit the GM position in order to concentrate on playing and kicking their butts.

The Salerno game is wrapped up, took me about 65 turns to own the board and force a surrender.
Anzio is still going, at around Turn 120.

Although this game is advertised as supporting up to 64 players at the online games, it did slow down the server with more than 36 players at once, this happens in the original Battlefield 1942 as well.
It is refreshing to see an add-on game stick by the original game yet bring its own style to play.
Road to Rome is a winner as is the original game Battlefield 1942 and should bring many intense and 'deadly' hours of gameplay.

ANZIO has been rightly praised as one of the most historically accurate of all war games.

While in the game, you use a 3D box to follow the contours of the terrain, clicking with your mouse will move your soldier to that area.
The terrain in the game is amazing because SSI has used what is called a ”layering" effect for the game map.
One thing I noticed right away with this and other SSI games is that the in-game tutorial is becoming the best way to really get into and understand a new PC game.

Each game turn, the player is presented with a dialog box of available air missions, either reconnaissance or air strike.
With campaign games of at least 80 turns, that adds up to a lot of time staring at the screen, trying to understand the individual combat results in the context of the overall military situation.

Sunday I solitaired about half of a game of Anzio Beachhead from SandT 134.
This is a redesign of an earlier SPI game, according to the designer.
The Germans get a special unit to represent the Goliath tank (a small self self propelled bomb, basically), the allies get some naval support and air power, there is an optional rule for paratroop drops, and artillery has some special rules.

It was an interesting expansion to the rather bland basic game and I believe was the test bed for the game that was later published as Strategy I. For the time, excellent.
Bastogne was the first separate "game" published in S&T (remember that they were originally going to do a full game every _other_ issue, and Crete in #18 was the first).
China, and the IJ forces committed there are abstracted in the game as published although a large amount of China is on the map.

Last weekends Jolt game was forfeited by CFM, so we get the win, a tad annoying we didnt get a game however.
Anzio is a frantic map at the best of times and this was no exception.
A few problems for both teams (connections dropping etc.) during the game, but I'm happy to report we won in the end and gained 60pts in the UK DoD Ladder.

Few games allow both sides to be on the offensive (not just limited counter-attacks) and defense throughout an entire scenario.
The "V for Victory" series PC game Market-Garden has better balance than the TOAW version which is hoplessly lopsided in favor of the Allies.
There were a few scenarios with the game (or later add-ons) that started/finished on intra-campaign dates as opposed to having to play the whole campaign.
