The script is based on a story by Aoi Hiiragi called Neko no Danshaku, Baron.

Shizuku, the high school student at the center of this coming-of-age story, lives an ordinary life with her danchi-dwelling middle-class family: working parents, cramped accomodations, an annoying older sister.
Miyazaki's adaptation shifts the Tsukishima family a socio-economic rung downward from the upper-middle class neighborhood in Hiiragi's manga to a urban danchi.
This straightforward depiction of lower-middle class Tokyo family life is one of the pleasant surprises of the film.

This schoolgirl fantasy is spun off from Yoshifumi Kondo's sublime Whisper of the Heart, and is again taken from a manga story by Aoi Hiiragi featuring the character of the Baron, a cat statue that comes to life in the evening light.
As entrusted to first-time Studio Ghibli director Hiroyuki Morita, it's a lightweight and slightly perfunctory tale when compared to the Miyazaki blockbuster now known in the West, but it comes with the same virtues of heart, imagination and universal appeal.
Adapted from Aoi Hiragi’s comic, the story follows virtuous but credible Tokyo schoolgirl Haru, whose bravery in saving a cat’s life results in her being summoned to the Kingdom of Cats as the betrothed of the Cat Prince, Lune.

Although it comes from Japan's Ghibli animation studio, which gave us Spirited Away, the often wondrous and adult-hued children's fantasy that offered an alternative pole in the animation universe to Pixar/Disney, The Cat Returns is a different beast.
Based on a graphic novel by Aoi Hiiragi, it is sweeter, plainer and more traditional in both look and structure than Spirited Away.
Beautifully handpainted in what could be water colours, its story is in many ways a twist on a typical Brothers Grimm tale of a girl punished for nothing more than being good.

It doesn't seek to be life-altering or deeply profound, but instead works as a sweet, little story, remaining highly entertaining throughout.
