Lake Towada, a crater lake, straddles Aomori's boundary with Akita.
The two major dialects of Japanese spoken in Aomori Prefecture are Tsugaru-ben (津軽弁) and Nambu-ben (南部弁); the former is prevalent in the area around Aomori City, and the latter is heard in and around the city of Hachinohe.

Aomori is pretty much the least developed prefecture in the country.
I went under the auspices of the Jet program, which is probably the most widely recognized "teach English in Japan" program there is; it is run by the Japanese government's Monbusho (ministry of culture, sports, recreation, education, etc.).
In Aomori there are three big cities: Aomori (the capital, 350,000 people), Hachinohe (not quite as big), and Hirosaki (smaller still, but the cultural center of the prefecture).
