Aoyama was a genius in drawing ever since he was young.
During his university years (winter 1986), Aoyama joined a comic contest for freshmen and won, which was a stepping-stone for his career as a manga artist (mangaka) and author, as well as a turning point for his life.
Aoyama's maiden work was a manga named Chotto Mattete, which was published in the weekly magazine Shonen Sunday on winter 1987.
As Aoyama told a reporter, "It is as if they are pursued by an endless tidal wave preventing them from regaining their balanced lives." Critics have given the film mixed reviews.
Aoyama, who also wrote the script, has said he was thinking of the 1995 nerve-gas murders in the Tokyo subway and of the general condition of postwar Japan.
He is seeking to forge a bond with them, and the relationship becomes central to the film and to all of their redemptions.

Let's make it plain from the start, since there is no way around it: Shinji Aoyama's latest film will be an endurance test for some.
The girl has caught the disease and her father is convinced that Mizui and Asahara's music is the key to beating its symptoms and saving her life.
If, as is often the case with Aoyama, the plot outline sounds vaguely similar to a Kiyoshi Kurosawa film (the equally dystopian Barren Illusion, in which Aoyama appeared as an actor), the execution is all his own.
Professor Yuko Aoyama received her Ph.D. from University of California at Berkeley in 1996.
Her current research projects include the organizational dynamics of the U.S. logistics industry, IT entrepreneurship in Japan and New England, E-Commerce and the retail sector, and cultural industries in a variety of forms.
Professor Aoyama has been awarded an Abe Fellowship from the Social Science Research Council, as well as research grants from the National Geographic Society, the Association of Asian Studies, and the National Science Foundation, Geography and Regional Science and Economics Programs.
Hiroshi Aoyama took KTM's first ever victory in the 250cc class at Turkey today, after one of the most breathtaking final laps of all time.
The Japanese was overtaken by both Alex de Angelis and Hector Barbera on either side on the flat-out charge to the final chicane on the last lap - then had the spectacular sight of both riders colliding as they crossed lines in front of him!
Meanwhile, a bizarre first corner collision with Aoyama's younger brother Shuhei - who seemed not to turn as he arrived at the corner - knocked pre-race favourite and championship leader Jorge Lorenzo out of the race.

In Aoyamas world, obsession is the common condition of man, and for his purposes here, it takes the form of a workaholic detective Saga and a homicidal leukemia patient Shimano.
Each is driven down the road to destruction, a path on which Aoyama explores the dark night of the human soul.
Making quite a splash in the mid-90s with the decade's original teens-on-a-rampage film Helpless, Shinji Aoyama has carved out a fascinating career for himself.
Vacillating between taut genre exercises like An Obsession, Embalming and Two Punks, and more austere arthouse fare such as Eureka, To the Alley and Desert Moon, Aoyama has never been anything less than idiosyncratic.
