One by one the Apache tribes were either decimated until they were no longer able to withstand the incursions of settlers, or they were subdued in large groups and herded onto reservations set aside for their use, such as the Fort Apache Reservation and the Navajo Reservation.

Last week, Apache County Board of Supervisors voted 2-1 to make a lateral transfer of Johnny Guthrie, Intergovernmental Relations Liaison at the sheriff's office, to Deputy County Attorney III in the county attorney's office.
Article 7 provides that it is the duty of the county attorney to be required to give a written opinion to county officers on matters relating to the duties of their offices.
"The taxpayers of Apache County should not have to bear the expense of supporting this position when by statute it is the duty of the office of the county attorney to provide this service," Wengert read.

There were a few white settlers in the county before 1879 but the first group to settle in the area were the 230 Mormon pioneers who first arrived in Bluff via the famous Hole-in-the-Rock trail on 6 April 1880.
As the full-scale settlement of the county progressed some of the pioneers moved from Bluff and helped to settle Blanding and Monticello where they were able to dry farm and ranch and didn't have to deal with the floods and drought in Bluff.
The 1990 population figures for the county have the population at 12,621.

The charges were part of a six-count felony indictment issued last Wednesday against Apache County Sheriff Brian Hounshell, but Hough's name was not released until this week.
Hounshell is charged with two counts of misuse of public monies, one count of fraudulent schemes and artifices, and one count of theft.

Apache County has also hired an outside agency to conduct another investigation, following a complaint filed by an employee of the sheriff’s office.

The Sheriff has often been challenged for his department's spending on the reservation "I have never taken funding away from southern Apache County and given it to the Northern Districts, said Hounshell's statement.
Hounshell believes the charges against him are "unfounded and without merit," and he welcomes a trial so he can be vindicated by a jury of his peers.

Former longtime Apache County Sheriff Art Lee hired Hounshell in the mid-1980s and said he recommended him to fill his unfinished term upon his retirement six years ago.
