  Review: Aparajito
Aparajito, the middle installment of legendary Indian film maker Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy, follows his 1955 debut, Pather Panchali, and precedes 1959's The World of Apu.
In the early sequences of Aparajito, Ray paints a memorable picture of the city and its culture -- Banaras is a place where the ordinary and the majestic blend seamlessly together.
Aparajito was filmed forty years ago, half way around the world, yet the themes and emotions embedded in the narrative are strikingly relevant to modern Western society (thus explaining why it is called a "timeless classic").

IndiaStar: Aparajito by B. Bandopadhyay, translated by Gopu Mazumdar and reviewed by Meenakshi Mukherjee
Aparajito traces tile growth of an imaginative boy, Apu, from the age of 10 through adolescence to adulthood, as much through events and relationships as through the books he reads andd his restless travels.
Despite his abject penury, what stays in the reader's mind is not Apu's deprivation, but his sense of wonder that makes even the ordinary luminous, and the lure of the unknown that propels his life.
On the other hand such a reader might be impatient with a cultural stereotype that idealises the imaginative and irresponsihle dreamer, sceptical of organised social action or wordly success.

 Aparajito (1956) (aka The Unvanquished)
Aparajito doesn't just evoke fear, it contains the fear of losing (someone else), the fear of driving (someone else) away and the fear of being forgotten (by someone else).
For all of her subservience, her desire to keep to the shadows, Sarbojaya is the central axis of Aparajito.
The problem is that relative to this later emotional complexity, the beginning of Aparajito is both slow and often unfathomable.

Although Satajit Ray was to old, sick and spent to fully appreciate his special Oscar, it was to the Academy's credit that it finally did recognize this supreme artist.
It's often been said that "Aparajito" is the lesser of the three film that comprise "The Apu Trilogy." I personally don't buy that.
Viewing "Pather Panchali," "Aparajito" and "The World of Apu" in one continuous sequence is the proper way to get the full impact of this incredible piece of work.

 Aparajito
Aparajito, Satyajit Ray's sequel to Pather Panchali, is an often touching film that, while not quite as appealing as is its predecessor, is still able to fascinate and engage the viewer.
Rather than allowing the viewer to savor the sadness arising from some tragedy, such as the death of a family member, Ray burdens these occurrences with exaggerated histrionics and overlays them with wailing music so that, instead of feeling sorrow, the viewer may actually be made to laugh.
Most of Aparajito is, in fact, well crafted and is able to engage the viewer with Apu and his world.

Aparajito is fundamentally, the story of a boy who becomes a man through a rigorous process of growing up.
Apu decides to study in Calcutta, despite the ferrous opposition of his mother; so against all odds, he makes the journey(once more the unerring mythic seed beneath the plot), and he demonstrates to be a very clever and intelligent pupil.
Now, in the second movie, Aparajito, Sarbojaya faces a life without a husband, and her remaining child begs for an education; wins a scholarship and travels to Calcutta for further studies.

PATHER PANCHALI + THE WORLD OF APU - DVDs
Note that the word "trilogy" generally indicates three parts; note also that the omitted film, Aparajito, constitutes the middle of this particular trilogy, making the experience of watching movies one (Panther Panchali) and three (The World of Apu) in conjunction seem weirdly disconnected.
Aparajito intervenes between the two movies discussed herein--it starts in the city with the death of Apu's father, depicts Apu achieving at school, and concludes with Apu's mother dying.
Returning to the city, Apu and his new, beautiful wife Aparna form a bond of love that is shattered when she dies in childbirth; the grief-stricken Apu turns into a wanderer, shunning his son and hoping to bury himself in a loner's obscurity.

FILM REVIEW -- Apu Moves Toward Manhood / `Aparajito' explores mother-son bond   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
In ``Aparajito'' (The Unvanquished), the second installment in his Apu Trilogy, Indian film maker Satyajit Ray created one of the screen's great family tales -- the story of a mother's love for her son, and the son's conflicting need for adventure and independence.
Made in 1956, on the heels of his debut film ``Pather Panchali,'' ``Aparajito'' (opening today at the Embarcadero Center Cinema) is easily as graceful, insightful and moving as its predecessor.
Ray captures the brave smile on Sarbajaya's face as she waves good-by; when Apu's back is turned, the smile evaporates, and her face grows tense with the fear of loneliness.

Aparajito is the second and perhaps best of Satyajit Ray's Apu trilogy.
Much of the appeal of Ray's work lies in his universal themes, in this case the transitional period of a child's growing into an adult and leaving home to find the world.
Although it was not distributed outside of India until later, Aparajito was first released in 1956.

As in Pather Panchali and Aparajito, Apu Sansar concludes with an image of Apu traveling away from the the safe and familiar surroundings of the past, facing an uncertain path to the future.
It is a symbolic road that he has taken throughout his life: through economic necessity, academic pursuit, and personal tragedy.

"Aparajito" is the second film of Satyajit Ray's 'Apu Trilogy' (Pather Panchali, Aparajito and Apur Sansar) continues to document the life and maturation of one young Indian boy.
The Region-2 PAL DVD of THE APU TRILOGY from UK's Artificial Eye was apparently the result of a hi-def transfer and digital cleanup, and it looks sharper and has much fewer speckles, scratches, and other blemishes that are seen on the R1 discs.
The R1 disc of APARAJITO runs 110 minutes total, including 90 seconds of credits for the Merchant-Ivory restoration; thus the film itself runs 108 minutes.

Let me demur from the hordes screaming that stupid phrase "instant classic," and suggest that the greatest film trilogy of all time is not Peter Jackson's, but Satyajit Ray's.
