PSR 1913+16   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
In the case of PSR 1913+16, the orbit is inclined at about 45 degrees with respect to the plane of the sky, and it is oriented such that periastron occurs nearly perpendicular to our line of sight.
When they are closer together, near apastron, the gravitational field is stronger, so that the pasage of time is slowed down -- the time between pulses (ticks) lengthens just as Einstein predicted.
The pulsar clock is slowed down when it is travelling fastest and in the strongest part of the gravitational field; it regains time when it is travelling more slowly and in the weakest part of the field.

Viewed from a reference frame where one of the stars is at rest, the secondary star moves in an elliptical orbit.
The secondary star is at apastron when the two stars have their greatest separation.

Suggestions from several sources indicate that Mira and its white-dwarf companion have an at least partially symbiotic relationship as the white dwarf does seem to be accreting matter from Mira.
In the illustrations for this essay, I have only shown visible evidence of accretion when the white dwarf is quite close to Mira (Yes, I am aware that I probably made the accretion disk WAAAAAY too small).

Similarly, in the orbit of the earth or another planet around the sun, the perihelion is the point of closest approach and the aphelion is the point of farthest recession.
In the orbit of the stars in a binary star system, the periastron is the point of closest approach and the apastron the point of farthest recession.
A line connecting the two apsidal points of an elliptical orbit (e.g., the aphelion and perihelion) is called the line of apsides; it is the major axis of the ellipse.

Rambles: John A. Senneff, The Apastron Reports: Quest for Life   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The story in The Apastron Reports is an adventure that two brothers share as they discover life on other planets.
They have a closeknit relationship, and at the end of each chapter they are whisked away from danger and evil to wake up in a new environment.
Serving a certain religious mindset, the book could have some appeal to the greater public, but would probably need adult participation, reading out loud or group readings, to fully be appreciated.

When the pulsar is near periastron (closest approach to the star), the bursts are more intense, now around 1.4 percent the brightness of the Crab Nebula.
When the pulsar is near apastron (most distant from the star), the bursts are weaker, down to less than 1 percent of the Crab, almost at the threshold of the BATSE.
The identification is based on J2058+42's behavior matching that of other Be-pulsar binaries.

If r(min) is the distance from the high-mass star to low-mass star at periastron, and r(max) is the distance at apastron, then equating J at these two points gives: m* v * r(min) = m * V * r(max), where v is the speed at periastron and V is the speed at apastron.
