Topic: Ape Cave

  Crater Firn Caves
Periodic observations and resurveys of cave passages, in which changes in passage dimensions and location are noted, enable the detection of heat-flow changes and of locations of volcanic emanations.
The caves are interpreted to be approximately in balance with the present geothermal heat release, because they have reached an apparently stable morphology.
As cave ablation and surface ablation continue through a summer season, it is normal for the cave ceiling to approach and intersect the ice surface progressively over time.

This portion of the cave is the dryest part of the cave- the lava walls are a lot rougher, having never been eroded by the dripping water.
The tricky part is at the top of this fall; the roof of the cave lowers to within a few feet of the top of the fall, but the passage opens up again a few feet farther up the cave.
Near the downslope end of the cave, the passage is split by a shelf.

Caving in Mount St. Helens - Into the Volcano: Ape Cave, Washington
Unlike caves carved by the slow passage of water over rock, the Ape Cave is a lava tube—created by an eruption of Mount St. Helens about 1,900 years ago.
The largest contiguous lava tube in the Western Hemisphere, Ape Cave's two-and-a-half mile tunnel wasn't explored until 1946, when a local Boy Scout troop—the St. Helens Apes, for whom the cave is named—discovered it.
During the cave's creation, hot gases trapped in the tube remelted the walls and ceiling to form lava stalactites, or "lava-sicles." One cooled ball of lava floated down the tube's flow until it got stuck between ledges; the lava drained and left it perched ten feet overhead.
