Aperture grille - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Additionally, aperture grille displays tend to be vertically flat and are often horizontally flat as well, while shadow mask displays usually have a spherical curvature.
The first patented aperture grille televisions were manufactured by Sony in the late 1960s under the Trinitron brand name, which the company carried over to its line of CRT computer monitors.
One significant drawback to the use of aperture grille monitors are the faint lines that appear at one third and two thirds of the screens' height (often at just one location—usually 2/3rds—on smaller displays).

Aperture grille technology has the same intentions as shadow masks, to prevent pixel glow leakage.
Another advantage aperture grilles have over shadow masks is that they only need to be curved horizontally instead of both planes.
Each grille wire is stretched vertically very tightly to ensure that wire "shimmering" doesn't occur and that a sharp image is produced.

Aperture grille tubes use stripe pitch or aperture grille pitch to measure the horizontal distance between its phosphor stripes.
A given aperture grille pitch is roughly equivalent to a slightly bigger dot pitch.
For example, a 0.25mm aperture grille pitch is roughly equivalent to a 0.27mm dot pitch.

Aperture grille monitors shimmer more when you tap them than shadow mask monitors, because of the instability of the grille - which is why they need the damper wires.
Aperture grille monitors have a quite different phosphor pattern from shadow mask ones, which makes it hard to compare their resolution capabilities with those of shadow mask monitors.

Aperture grille technology employs a series of thin, closely-spaced vertical wires to isolate pixels horizontally.
A third advantage of an aperture grille is that it is much less susceptible than a shadow mask to warping caused by heat.
To keep the vertical wires in an aperture grille properly aligned within the picture tube, one or two horizontal damper wires are required.

The distance between two same-colored phosphors is called the dot pitch for the shadow mask, the stripe pitch for the aperture grille, and the slot mask pitch for the slot mask.
An aperture grille display with the same pixel density would claim a pixel pitch of 0.22mm while the shadow mask display measures it as 0.26mm.
Aperture grille displays measure stripe pitch, the horizontal distance between same-colored phosphor stripes.

 Aperture
The aperture area of a collector is the opening or projected area of a collector through which the unconcentrated solar energy is admitted.
Reducing the aperture size increases the depth of field, which describes the extent to which subject matter lying closer than or farther from the actual plane of focus appears to be in focus.
In general, the smaller the aperture, the greater the distance from the plane of focus the subject matter may be while still appearing in focus.

Aperture grille CRTs do not have vertical breaks between the stripes of phosphors, so the distance between the like-colored stripes are measured only on the horizontal plane (Fig.

An Aperture Grille consists of a series of long vertical slits fastened with strong vertical tension to a steel supporting frame.
The vertical tension of the Aperture Grille absorbs any thermal expansion, thus eliminating the problem of doming or color spill and resulting in a superior picture quality.
Since the CRT requires a vacuum to function, a damper wire which is approximately 15 microns in diameter is strategically placed on the Aperture Grille to reduce susceptibility to resonance.

Four technical elements—the flat glass panel, the fine pitch aperture grille, a high-focus electron gun and a high-precision deflection yoke—work together to produce images with outstanding color, clarity and detail.
The fine pitch aperture grille uses higher tension and thicker support members, which help focus the electrons for enhanced detail.
This technology combines small aperture grids, which greatly refines the electron beam and ensures consistent, accurate focus across the entire screen—even in the corners.

Originally invented as Trinitron by Sony in 1968, the Aperture Grille uses lines of phosphor rather than dot trios, with a grille of vertical metal strips to direct the electron beam.
Due to their design, aperture grille monitors can be prone to moiré patterns and can exhibit a bias towards line detail in the horizontal.
Screen geometry will always be perfect as there is no aperture grille or shadow mask to cause alignment problems and no need to worry about convergence errors in the corners.

Color CRT's, Shadowmasks, Magnetic Fields and Degauss
All color CRTs utilize a shadowmask or aperture grill a fraction of an inch(1/2" typical) behind the phosphor screen to direct the electron beamsfor the red, green, and blue video signals to the proper phosphor dots.
Since the electron beams for the R, G, and B phosphors originate from slightly different positions (individual electron guns for each) and thus arrive at slightly different angles, only the proper phosphors are excited when the purity is properly adjusted and the necessary magnetic field free region is maintained inside the CRT.
An aperture grille, used exclusively in Sony Trinitrons (and now their clones as well), replaces the shadowmask with an array of finely tensioned vertical wires.
