Where, as in the argenvillei and aphanes groups, the sperm within each group are structurally similar, it is likely that immunological and biochemical rather than structural features of the gametes act as species barriers preventing hydridization.
Trends in sperm evolution, from a morphology in the argenvillei and aphanes groups which is close to that of 'primitive' sperm, include elongation of the nucleus and development of a pointed conical acrosome in the cochlear group; development of a rounded posterior acrosome love in the concolor group; and numerous other described changes.
Patellid species which are at least partly sympatric do not maintain reproductive isolation by staggering of the spawning time in terms of the time of the year, though the degree of interspecific, and intraspecific, synchrony during the day require further investigation.

 Igneous Rock Identification Exercise
On the other hand, magma erupted at the surface is chilled so quickly that the individual minerals have little or no chance to grow.
As a result, the rock is either composed of minerals that can be seen only with the aid of a microscope (called aphanitic, from the Greek aphanes, meaning "invisible") or contains no minerals at all (in the latter case, the rock is composed of glass, which is really a viscous, non-crystalline liquid).
This results in two groups of igneous rocks: (1) plutonic or intrusive igneous rocks that solidified deep within the earth and (2) volcanic, or extrusive, igneous rocks formed at the Earth's surface.

 Alcmaeon
Most of the subjects that Alcmaeon went on to discuss in his book could not be settled by a direct appeal to sense perception (e.g., the functioning of the senses, the balance of opposites in the healthy body, the immortality of the soul).
In this sense he was dealing largely with what is "not perceptible" (aphanes).
Alcmaeon is decidedly not an extreme skeptic, however, in that he is willing to assign clear understanding about such things to the gods and by implication admits that even humans have clear understanding of what is directly perceptible.
