Aphek was the biggest site Kochavi had ever excavated and, at 30 acres, it was one of the largest ancient sites in Israel.
The Philistines arrived at Aphek in the 11th century B.C. Among the artifacts they left behind were several figurine heads of Ashdoda (a Philistine goddess), a clay tablet inscribed in an undeciphered script (scholars have yet to crack the Philistine language) and Philistine-style pottery.
He proudly displays the first volume of the Aphek final report and says that the next volume will be out in a year or two.

Aphek's identification, made secure by Albright and Alt in 1923, was based on the many occurrences of the site's names both in the Bible and in Egyptian, Assyrian, and Roman-Byzantine sources.
This project, which excavated the Upper City of Aphek from 1976-1985, was carried out under the supervision of Professor Moshe Kochavi for the Institute of Archaeology of Tel Aviv University.
One of the only absolute dates for a late 13th century destruction is attested at Aphek's last palace, the Egyptian Residence.

Despite Beck’s concerns already in 1985 that inter-regional differences limit the utility of the Aphek sequence, a characteristic that has been further underscored by the evidence from Kabri and Dan, some of her seminal observations still hold, particularly her identification of the so-called Levantine Painted Ware as a ceramic hallmark of the early MB IIa.
At present, based primarily on the intra-site typological development at Aphek, there is more or less an accepted scheme of relative synchronizations (chronological chart), with a tripartite division that is considered MB IIa proper, and a fourth phase used to mark the transition to the MB IIb period.
This example from Aphek Palace II phase is the earliest found so far and is considered by Weinstein to date to no earlier than the 13th Dynasty.
