Aphonopelma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aphonopelma is a genus of tarantulas including nearly all of the North American tarantulas north of Mexico and a considerable part of the tarantulas which range into Central America.
The taxonomy is poorly understood and species are difficult to tell apart, especially those that are brown or fl without other pattern.

Friends of Saguaro National Park - About Saguaro National Park: Tarantulas
The most common genus is Aphonopelma, with 90 species total, occuring from the U.S. to South America.
One of the species that best embodies this relationship between life and death is the desert tarantula, Aphonopelma iodium.
Tarantulas, the largest spiders in North America, are typically two to three inches long and are covered with thousands of fine hairs ranging in color from tan to dark brown.

 SDNHM: Tarantula
Tarantulas are large, hairy spiders, with a leg span that may be as wide as 5 or 6 inches.
Despite Hollywood's deadly and aggressive image of the tarantula, the truth is that San Diego County's three resident species of the genus Aphonopelma are actually quite docile.
Both males and females are capable of inflicting a bite when threatened, but they rarely do so and their venom is considered non-toxic to humans.

Flávio C. Coelho and Carlos C. Amaya Physiological Entomology (2000) 25, 167-171 In this work we describe a non-invasive and precise technique to record the heartbeats of a spider.
A linear output Hall effect transducer in conjunction with a small magnet was used to monitor the micro-movements on the dorsal surface of the abdomen of the tarantula Aphonopelma hentzi (Girard) (Theraphosidae).
The exoskeleton in this region is in direct contact with suspensory ligaments connected to the heart, and the dorsal cuticle of the opisthosoma moves with each heartbeat.

This species may not belong to Aphonopelma, as the palps of the male are nothing like the palps of the other Aphonopelma (Reichling 2003).
There is variance in their habitats, as the west Mexican varieties enjoy a drier climate while the Central American species thrive with a bit of humidity.
This south-central Mexican species used to be considered an Aphonopelma species, until it was found that they possess both type I and type III urticating bristles and stridulatory organs.

I think it's one of the my favourite tarantula species, and with a bit of luck my little baby should grow into a great looking spider.
This time it's in part of its burrow that's against the side of the tank, and on 13th August I managed to get a photo (though not a very good one).
