Topic: Aphotic

In the News (Thu 24 Dec 09)

Aphotic - Satan Stole My Teddybear
Aphotic's sound is a slow, deathy style of doom with occasional lighter keyboard passages, but they never lose sight of creating a dreamy atmosphere throughout these five songs.
One such band is Aphotic, an American classic doom metal band who has already released two excellent demos and are now on their third attempt to woo a record label.
Aphotic is still embellishing the more romantic doom metal that was characterized by Katatonia before they switched to their morose Jeff Buckley tinged metal.

Aphotic formed in April of 2000 out of the remains of Green Bay’s Dusk and Crawl.
Aphotic decided to keep going and finish it within their time restraints and hoped for the best.
Currently Aphotic is awaiting the release of To Find New Darkness, and biding their time in hopes of obtaining a record contract, so that they can record their first full-length album.

Aphotic, admittedly, takes some growing on you, but the effort is worth it.
Aphotic growls at you but accompanies the slow demon snarl with deliberately paced, slow for metal instrumentals that include crunchy but unhurried guitars that knock along at their own little groove and heady gothic flavoring, no doubt from the programming.
Aphotic is an original metal act that certainly deserves to rise above the bulk of its peers.

THE METAL OBSERVER - Review - APHOTIC - Stillness Grows
APHOTIC are somewhat of a conundrum, or rather, I should say that their situation is. With the talent and brilliance that the band possesses, they should be hailed with the likes of MY DYING BRIDE in the Death-Doom circles, but instead, they toil in obscurity.
Well, APHOTIC isn’t one of those bands where the appeal is clouded in obscurity and you often have trouble placing your finger on what it is exactly that you enjoy so much, in fact, APHOTIC’s appeal is almost glaring in it’s obviousness.
APHOTIC, however, have found a way to infuse a great deal of Death into their Doom laden sound, all while managing to keep and without diminishing the characteristically sombre and melancholic Doom flavour.

CoC : Aphotic - Under Veil of Dark : Review
Aphotic's eponymous first demo [CoC #51] had already struck me as a sample of finely crafted tracks of forlorn beauty, and these four new tracks merely comfort me in my opinion that I have stumbled upon one of the finest unsigned bands I have ever heard.
Aphotic have successfully evolved towards introducing new elements of technicality and discreet variety in their ambient death metal, and the material on _Under Veil of Dark_ is memorable indeed.
With their second demo, Aphotic have raised their music to a new tier, and although they do not, as of yet, display the maturity of masters _Brave Murder Day_-era Katatonia or present-day Opeth, they are quite clearly revealing themselves as a powerful, emotional force to be reckoned with...

In the winter of 2004 Flood the Earth contacted Aphotic and a distribution deal was quickly reached, as well as plans to release the ‘Stillness Grows’ EP along with the two prior EP’s on one full-length CD.
This inspired Aphotic to put forth their full effort once again and try to obtain a contract for a real full-length album.
Aphotic is very aware of the sound that they want to finally achieve if they are given the chance to record their first album.

THE METAL OBSERVER - Review - APHOTIC/DUSK - To Find New Darkness/The Slumber
APHOTIC are a band who continue to defy logic.
Their four song portion of the split is quite possibly their most impressive material to date, as they continue to evolve.
The material is altogether heavier, further embracing the Death aspect of their Death/Doom style, all without compromising the ever prevalent atmosphere that is quintessential for this band.

Aphotic is very enjoyable, sometimes atmospheric Death-metal and if you're in the mood for something light, I would recommend this for sure.
Yet a quality band like Aphotic has to wait more than four years to see their material being released by a label, let alone to gain some recognition for it.
Aphotic's sound is contemplative, very atmospheric and easy on the ear of the trained listener.

Aphotic was formed in Wisconsin in 2000, out of the ashes of fellow Green Bay acts Dusk and Crawl.
Unlike most doom acts, Aphotic keep their songs short and to the point, with nearly all the songs between two and four minutes long.
Aphotic is entirely deserving of a recording deal and attention from the metal community, and hopefully their distribution deals will give them the exposure they deserve.

DigitalMetal.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Formed from the ashes of legendary doom acts Dusk and Crawl, Wisconsin’s Aphotic have been hard at work forging a new band to carry on the ethereal, natural doom metal of their prior acts.
Rather than drawn out, expansive dirges with vast builds and lengthy interludes, Aphotic trim the fat and deliver a tighter, lighter doom variant that’s no less emotional and while still containing varying degrees of acoustics, synths and such, never gets hung up in sonic overdramatics.
Its like between Aphotic and Stillness Grows, Aphotic became slightly indignant at their lack of recognition, and the music traces a slightly less self pity laden path.

CoC : Aphotic - Stillness Grows : Review
Aphotic are an American atmospheric death metal band that has been toiling in the shadows of the unsigned underground for several years now -- its demos earning high marks and vast praise while record labels strangely looked the other way.
Aphotic's gloomy atmospheric death has a sound of its own -- and finding a young band who doesn't borrow heavily from well-known acts is not an easy task.
This is debatable though, and the quality of all three demos remains high throughout; their sound quality is also sufficiently even to avoid any significant continuity flaws.

CoC : Aphotic - Stillness Grows : Review
Fair enough, Aphotic have a strong doom component in their music; but it took me just one glance at their latest demo for my spirits to sink even before I heard any of it.
You see, Aphotic have released two excellent demos on CD, complete with very tasteful packaging, and all to no avail -- inferior bands kept getting signed in the meantime, but not them.
Unfortunately that possibility is far from depending solely on the band, as apparently the record labels out there seem to have their eyes turned to easier -- if far less interesting -- markets.

Although I inevitably end up holding a grudge against bands preferring drum machines to human beings, Aphotic use this element to its fullest, and actually succeed in turning what could be a weak point into an instrument of cold, calculated rhythmic exactness.
This American trio have a powerful, meaningful form of music conjured here, and if they prove to rise towards the heights of "Psycoma" or "Livid Dread" on their forthcoming material, they have more than their fair chance to become one of the most significant and followed acts out in their own, darkened realms.
