Apion was a man of great versatility of intellect, superficially familiar with all branches of knowledge (περιεργότατōς γραμματικῶυ, Julius Africanus).
Apion was a voluminous writer, but few of his writings have been preserved except what is found in the quotations of Josephus, his adversary.
Apion was the author of "comments" on Homer and on Aristophanes, and also wrote a discourse on Apicius, the gourmet.

 Apion - LoveToKnow 1911
APION, Greek grammarian and commentator on Homer, born at Oasis in Libya, flourished in the first half of the 1st century A.D. He studied at Alexandria, and headed a deputation sent to Caligula (in 38) by the Alexandrians to complain of the Jews: his charges were answered by Josephus in his Contra Apionem.
Apion was a man of great industry and learning, but extremely vain.
The well-known story of Androclus and the lion, preserved in Aulus Gellius, is from his Alyu7rTCaKa; fragments of his FX rcrac `Ow pucai are printed in the Etymologicum Gudianum, ed.

 Early Jewish Writings
Apion ought to have looked upon those epistles, and in particular to have examined the testimonies given on our behalf, under Alexander and all the Ptolemies, and the decrees of the senate and of the greatest Roman emperors.
Apion ought to have had a regard to these facts, unless he had himself had either an ass's heart or a dog's impudence; of such a dog I mean as they worship; for he had no other external reason for the lies he tells of us.
But this Apion of ours was either perfectly unskillful in the composition of such fallacious discourses, or however, when he begun [somewhat better], he was not able to persevere in what he had undertaken, since he hath no manner of success in those reproaches he casts upon us.

an embassy to the emperor Caligula, which was headed by Apion, for he was a skilful speaker and known to entertain great hatred of the Jews.
In this transaction Apion appears to have overstepped the limits of his commission, for he not only brought forward the complaints of his fellow-citizens, but endeavoured to excite the emperor's anger against the Jews by reminding him that they refused to erect statues to him and to swear by his sacred name.
Apion was the author of a considerable number of works, all of which are now lost with the ex ception of some fragments.

 Flavius Josephus Against Apion
He says further, how he had "heard of the ancient men, that Moses was of Heliopolis." To be sure that was, because being a younger man himself, he believed those that by their elder age were acquainted and conversed with him.
Nor call I devise what Apion would have said, had their habitation been at Necropolis, and not been fixed hard by the royal palace [as it is]; nor had their nation had the denomination of Macedonians given them till this very day [as they have].
This is attested by many worthy writers; Polybius of Megalopolis, Strabo of Cappadocia, Nicolaus of Damascus, Timagenes, Castor the chronologer, and Apollodorus; who all say that it was out of Antiochus's want of money that he broke his league with the Jews, and despoiled their temple when it was full of gold and silver.

 Josephus: Against Apion 1:223-6
Apion had composed a treatise against the Jews in the midst of the crisis which arose in the capital of Egypt, Alexandria, in the first third of that century.
The first is reflected in this passage, and the second questioned Apion’s legitimacy as an historian as well as the credibility of his sources.
Such a derogatory assessment of the type of animism thought to have been representative of indigenous Egyptian religion was adopted later by Christianity and Islam, and persisted throughout Jewish literary treatments of paganism.

He supposes that Apion's throne was justified in terms of implementing the terms of Ptolemy VIII's will, leaving Ptolemy X in place in Egypt and Ptolemy IX in place in Cyprus.
But it could well be that the settlement occurred before her death, and that the surety of Roman recognition was a factor in freeing Ptolemy X's hand to murder his mother.
Alternately, it may be that he did not initially hold a royal title, but was merely a strategos, just as Ptolemy X may initially have been strategos of Cyprus.

Against Apion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Against Apion was a work written by Flavius Josephus as a defense of Judaism as a classical religion and philosophy, stressing its antiquity against the relatively more recent traditions of the Greeks.
Some anti-Semitic allegations attributed by Josephus to Apion (who Josephus states is not Greek), and myths as old as Manetho's are exposed there as well, though there was apparently some confusion between Manetho's references to the Hyksos, and the Hebrews.
Assuming that Josephus was completely familiar with Manetho's points, Manetho may have simply written a blanket condemnation of all Semitic peoples.

Josephus: the Manuscripts of the Minor Works: The "Vita" and the "Contra Apion"
Contra Apionem.--As a set-off to the Life, the treatise Contra Apionem, in two books, is the most attractive of our author's works ; exhibiting a well designed plan, great literary skill, an intimate acquaintance with Greek philosophy and poetry, together with a sincere and impassioned zeal for his country's religion.
The title (not the author's) is not very happily chosen; Apion being merely one representative of Israel's enemies.
Older titles were "On the antiquity of the Jews" (not sufficiently distinctive) and "Against the Greeks." Designed as a reply to criticisms on the Antiquities and a refutation of current prejudices, the work contains an apology for Judaism with a demonstration of the antiquity of the race.
